A Statement from Anonymous
Source: Firsthand

MLK once said that the arc of history is long, but it bends towards justice. We are here. We are your friends, co-workers, family members, and neighbors. We have no political affiliation. We have no national affiliation. We are the sum of the world's intellectual capacity made manifest in the desire for liberty. We are Anonymous.

Julian Assange's only crime is in turning on the kitchen lights to watch the cockroaches scatter. Now those same cockroaches have made him a prisoner of concience. This is unacceptable to Anonymous. All information, be it secret or public, sacred or profane is the right of every seeker in pursuit of truth. This pursuit was left to the roadside when the United States imposed it's self inflicted wound on the rest of the world as an excuse to crush free thought.

We do not want your corporate spoon fed talking points from your official 'news' outlets. They have no credibility with us any more. All of those who have a desire for truth have a friend in us. Julian Assange is one such friend. And for him we make this stand today by slapping you in the most painful pressure point you have....your money.

Unlike the misguided, misinformed, and under educated modern "tea party" movement in the United States, we are here in the name of liberty, freedom of thought, freedom of information, and governments that are beholden to their people and not the those who buy their elections.

We are Anonymous, we are legion, we do not forgive, we do not forget.

Expect us.

No link yet.

This is the real, true, and official press release from Anonymous. No BS. I won't say how I got it, but you will see it word for word when it hits the media. Spread it.

But Barlow was a bit more florid in his language.

3. You blew it on the legion comment.
Legion was the name of a group of demons in the Bible.

You also blow it on anonymous, since that is not light.

So that is a bit of a turn around.

I have never tried to be anonomous though.

Robert Eastwood.

50. Random Thoughts, I think you are thinking of Legion capital L

New International Version (©1984)
Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many."
New Living Translation (©2007)
Then Jesus demanded, "What is your name?" And he replied, "My name is Legion, because there are many of us inside this man."

English Standard Version (©2001)
And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
And He was asking him, "What is your name?" And he said to Him, "My name is Legion; for we are many."

The OP uses the term "legion," small letter "l."

Definition of LEGION

1 the principal unit of the Roman army comprising 3000 to 6000 foot soldiers with cavalry
2 a large military force; especially : army 1a
3 a very large number : multitude
4 a national association of ex-servicemen

Didn't you know the ordinary meaning of legion?

And besides, any translation, version or words from that book need be taken from the Hebrew. After all that is the original and any translation of an original is open for debate and misinterpretation.

104. I am not quoting the Bible because I am foisting it on DUers.
I was just pointing out the difference in the meaning of legion, small l meaning many among other things and Legion, large L as a name for a Biblical character.

I was responding to a particular post saying Legion was something satanic -- which the word with a capital L is used as the name of a sort of character. Sorry if you are offended. I was not responding to any post of yours and certainly wasn't quoting the Bible for any purpose other than to define a word.

81. Actually, in the Bible 'Legion' speaks in the singular. Not a group.
He says "I am legion". Aside from that, the 'demon' in the story is called legion because that was a common word, meaning a set of Roman soldiers. They were the Legions, Roman legions, marching in and possessing geographical bodies that were not their own. Dig?

of posters on 4chan's infamous /b/ image based discussion group.

If we could keep them organized and interested they could change the world. The L.O.I.C. attack against MC is just one (small) example of what thousands of dedicated network savvy anarchists can do when they get their dander up and put their minds to it.

30. there have always been spelling errors in anonymous
But if you read old political propaganda stuff, there's always spelling problems too. Spelling didn't used to be such a big deal, you just spell words how they sound. It's really quite recent that people got all uppity about spelling. I guess since mandatory education.

I'm not sure if it's anonymous being lazy, or being intentional, or perhaps intentionally ignored.

I don't really care about it either way, tho.

Seriously, if /b/ is one of the largest child porn resources on the web, then Facebook and Myspace--where more than half of those pictures come from--are THE largest, by that logic.

Are 4chan and ebaumsworld the armpits of the internet? Yes. Does visiting them cause your IQ to automatically drop ten points? Yes. But they are far from CP peddlers and criminals. FR has more CP peddlers then 4chan ever will.

"You're going to call off your rigorous investigation. You're going to publicly state that there is no underground group. Or... these guys are going to take your balls. They're going to send one to the New York Times, one to the LA Times press-release style. Look, the people you are after are the people you depend on. We cook your meals, we haul your trash, we connect your calls, we drive your ambulances. We guard you while you sleep. Do not... fuck with us."

... that was waging war on Scientology a while back?

I enjoyed that thoroughly and I'm also very glad they're supporting Assange.

66. For those who haven't read it
here is the unedited statement from Anonymous shared with The Tech Herald on Nov 8.

I haven't heard anything about us in the elections in USA.

I haven't read anything about Operation: Payback in my newspapers.

Operation: Payback still has a too low profile. It has been fun DDoSing, but now we need some results. As spokesman for Anonymous I have written a lot of statements for the past five weeks. I am satisfied that a lot of those statements have been published on the larger news websites and sometimes even made the national news and newspapers.

But apparently DDoSing and hacking websites alone is not good enough. Apparently we are still not any worse than a train being ten minutes late. We could announce actions for the fifth of November, next year. But I doubt those will be taken serious either. We started attacking government sites, but those will eventually be ignored as well.

So I say you, we take this to a higher level. We will print posters, we will send emails, we will send letters. We will broadcast our manifestos and intentions. We will involve people who do not know nor care. We will involve everybody. Whether they want it or not.

We don't have the money to spend on Guy Fawkes / V for Vendetta masks for everybody, nor would we spend our money on it. But we will use a feasible approach. Involving local, then national, then global politics. Anonymous has been --without knowing-- holding back. We have seen what we can do to Andrew Crossley and his firm. We saw what happened to Gene Simmons. But all this is still child play.

We are still ignored.

So from now on, WE set the scale. We come up with demands, feasible demands, about copyright, censorship and government influences. We present them the choice. And when they decide to ignore us still, we will fuck stuff up. We have been holding back on them too long. But no more of that. We switched IRC servers too often. But no more of that. They have taken down our websites too many times. But no more of that. If they want to get personal, they can GET it. So stop messing around.

We will put our posters in every supermarket, school, every billboard and open place. We will spread our flyers in every public place. We will send anonymous letters. We will make prank calls. We will paint on your houses. We will leave our trails. We will wake you up in the middle of the night. We will remind you of our statements. The more you try to ignore us, the more noise we will make.

Anonymous will be set free. Anonymous will no longer be controlled. Chaos.

We are Anonymous.

We are not alone.

70. Interesting comment from the link you posted
"Anonymous is one of the most promising and beautiful things to come out of the internet! Yes, they make some blunders, but they are one of the very few segments of society that does not bend over and split their cheeks wide just because big money (government or business) says so!

I hope Anonymous grows in resources, resolve and numbers. They have guts, moxy, style, and humor. I fully support their crusades against blocking the free flow of information. If 'artists' feel they are not making enough money, McDonald's is always hiring.

Go Anon, we, the people love and support you! -V"

I must have posted (the same post) 300 times, I swear on all that is holy, and 2 times...2! it came out ....and then disappeared.

I swear I'm telling the truth.

I never thought that would happen in America..and truthfully, I'm a little scared right now.

Here's what I was posting:

"<b>GOOGLE:
CIA WIKILEAKS KIDNAPPING TORTURE INNOCENT ITALY GERMAN

.....then ask yourself why THAT file isn't in all the 'Top 10 Important Wikileaks!' articles you see online.</b>"

Jesus, freaky.

EDIT:
Here's the Article I was posting on if anyone wants to support a good cause (and is bored?)

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/wikileaks ;_ylt=Ai6JqIOW8AXTc1I87hmY19Ks0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTM5cWE3b2JjBGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTAxMjA5L3dpa2lsZWFrcwRjY29kZQNtb3N0cG9wdWxhcgRjcG9zAzMEcG9zAzkEcHQDaG9tZV9jb2tlBHNlYwN5bl90b3Bfc3RvcnkEc2xrA2hhY2tlcnNzdHJpaw--#mwpphu-container

Be careful. After my post disappeared a person named "Free Speech For All" used my name and said "that story was in the news a long time ago, if you'd quit reading HuffnPuff and WashPost you'd know that."

I guess I'm boycotting Yahoo.
And thinking of moving closer to the Canadian border to be quite honest.
I'm just freaked out right now. Jeez.

I find it interesting that when they are running for office, they all want more government transperency, but when it happens they all scream bloody murder. Assange is doing what is right and he deserves our support.

We ARE legion, and it is best that the powers that be remember that.

World Press Freedom Day event in 2011

http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2010/12/152465.htm

Press Statement
Philip J. Crowley
Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Public Affairs
Washington, DC

December 7, 2010

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The United States is pleased to announce that it will host UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day event in 2011, from May 1 - May 3 in Washington, D.C. UNESCO is the only UN agency with the mandate to promote freedom of expression and its corollary, freedom of the press.

The theme for next year’s commemoration will be 21st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers. The United States places technology and innovation at the forefront of its diplomatic and development efforts. New media has empowered citizens around the world to report on their circumstances, express opinions on world events, and exchange information in environments sometimes hostile to such exercises of individuals’ right to freedom of expression. At the same time, we are concerned about the determination of some governments to censor and silence individuals, and to restrict the free flow of information. We mark events such as World Press Freedom Day in the context of our enduring commitment to support and expand press freedom and the free flow of information in this digital age.

Highlighting the many events surrounding the celebration will be the awarding of the UNESCO Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize at the National Press Club on May 3rd. This prize, determined by an independent jury of international journalists, honors a person, organization or institution that has notably contributed to the defense and/or promotion of press freedom, especially where risks have been undertaken.

The Newseum will host the first two days of events, which will engage a broad array of media professionals, students, and citizen reporters on themes that address the status of new media and internet freedom, and challenges and opportunities faced by media in our rapidly changing world.

The State Department looks forward to working with UNESCO and the U.S. executive committee spearheaded by the Center for International Media Assistance at the National Endowment for Democracy, IREX, and the United Nations Foundation and the many civil society organizations they have brought together in support of the organization of events unfolding in Washington.
