President Truman signs executive order 9981 which states,

It is hereby declared to be the policy of the president that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services Without regard to race, color, religion or national origin"

http://www.infoplease.com/spot/civilrightstimeline1.html#events-1967

As I see it today, laws continue to be broken and or ignored by those that should be held at a higher standard for their roles in enacting said laws on all american citizens.

I still cannot believe that today with all the empty rhetoric and wasted time in enacting a mirage that DADT needs to be seemingly debated that the only thing need to be stated is the continued illegal behaviors of members of our government etc should be seen as reason for the people to stand up and demand those guilty be charged immediately with ignoring laws concerning the civil rights of a certain. Majority of american citizens and that DADT be immediately repelled based on illegal attacking the civil rights of certain members of our armed forces who like all put their lives on the line and serve their country no different than anyone else and therefore should be treated equal as per the law of this land..

That is all

1. If only he had left out "Without regard to race, color, religion or national origin"
By putting those in, he gave wiggle room for what would follow.. Of course, back then, he probably thought that included everyone.

3. Religion is the reason for any and all prejudice against certain citizens of this country
I believe he left no wiggle room and stated it perfectly, without religious bias standing strong there would be nothing more to hold the prejudices in this country up on it's perilous pedestal

4. I'm sure he thought he had it all covered, but
now the LACK of any reference to gay people gives the nutcases the wiggle room they think they have.

We DO have religious bias now, (and probably have for a while) in the military.

10. We have to take into account that in those years people kept silent about quite a few things
That today you would hope we now took for granted, and though in many ways people cannot be so easily shocked in todays world they love to still use that human trait on a whim if it serves their personal cause or feigned outrage on something or anything that is seen as the cause for the day

2. Well, that's back when politicians weren't all selfish, craven cowards
selected by Goldman Sachs, BoA, and USB.

6. Actualy there was more cowardice back then and false idolizing but it's obvious

That many more attempted at least to be slightly honest and saw such as a virtue not a hindrance, we have never been perfect but this country was founded for all people to enjoy freedom from religious persecution regardless there has been many through the years that have fought to enable such behaviors and sonsuch still exists sadly and in all honesty it leaves me with little hope for humanity as a whole considering we no longer live in false fear of things we once did not understand

Humanity does not have the best track record from it's inception since we are still ruled by prejudices, greed, fear of the unknown and the need to feel superior by ensuring classes of citizens still in this day and age can make a diffence in how one is treated abd viewed by others it should not but it does, we have yet to evolve enough to ever feel superior to any living creatures to date

11. Your quoting the Truman signed law
also applies to the issue of the Dream Act, which relates to nationality, specifically any Hispanics eligibility for citizenship if they join the military.
While I realizing you were pointing out DADT in relation to the Truman law, I was pointing out what was IN the law,
"national origin" in relation to recent news about the Dream Act.

8. When presidents had real genuine courage.
I doubt Mr. Truman ever gave any thought towards reelection as he took his actions. Hell, tha man even admitted to being a bit of a racist but he still DID the RIGHT thing.

Best president of the last 100 years hands fucking down. Christ we need his like again.

12. Throughout human existence the I wash your back you wash mine has not lessened
And yet I don't believe that back then the corporations had the massive amount of power in altering government that is happening in todays political spectrum...
Perhaps there was less fear among and more courage in our leaders than has been shown by those in todays governing positions

9. I have been asking that for quite some time
Edited on Thu Dec-09-10 06:33 PM by DearAbby
When did anyone have a vote when the military was desegregated? It was so ordered by the CIC. DADT could also be so ordered by the CIC. Dream Act could be so ordered by the CIC.

14. Yes he can do what needs to be done, obviously this is nothing more than a reason
To keep an old wedge issue from the left verses right in play to be used when needed in order to keep we the people looking the other way
