Combination Knitting.....?
Is there anyone here that uses this method and if so, How do you hold the yarn in your left hand?
At the web site 'annie modesitte.com' She drops or 'lets go' of the yarn with each stitch but I have seen
knitters that wrap the yarn and are much faster at knitting and with out the carpel tunnel pain.
I am so slow at knitting I only knit about one sweater a year, I have taken lessons, at the local
yarn shop, for knitting the English way and the Norwegian method but I just can't get the 'hang' of it.
This seems the easiest of all the different ways of knitting.
as always, thanks in advance... Grey

1. I can knit...

...in the continental, Norwegian and American way.

It just seems to take practice.....a lot of practice. Some methods take me longer than others...I do different ones so my hands don't cramp as much. Just do which ever way is easier for you and don't worry about how long it takes. ;)

Cheers

2. With so many patterns out there.....
....I'd like a faster, easier way to knit. Sooooo... How do you wrap the yarn for your left hand?

and thanks for the response. Grey

3. Here goes...
Edited on Wed Apr-11-07 04:35 PM by Bjornsdotter
....to control the tension I wrap it around my pinkie, bring the yarn up (on the palm side of my hand) across the next 3 fingers and then I pull the yarn over my index finger.

Then I take the needle in my right hand and pull the yarn through the stitch on the needle and slide it off onto the needle in my right hand.

 I had to go get some yarn and needles...for the life of me I couldn't answer your question without doing it. :p

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Edit----this is the Continental method

4. Sort of like I do when I crochet?
that's how I hold my yarn to crochet, pinching the yarn inside the fist? With the yarn laid over top of the index finger to guide the yarn,
do you hold the index finger of the left hand out straight, as in crochet or do you keep it on top of the needle? as in
anne modesitt dot com?

I tried going to knitty.com but they just sent me straight to knittinghelp.com, which I do enjoy.
Just love Amy and she has been a big help so they got the name right.
think I'll go pick up some yarn and give this a try..... Thanks Grey

5. I found a really good web site..
for teaching & showing how to knit. It's called Craft Sanity. sorry, I don't know how to make the short links.

http://www.craftsanity.com/files/09c43733fd63268a890990b511a184f7-15.html

I may have to watch with yarn & needles in hand, *grin* How many times?

Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks....

6. I have another one --
I'm learning to knit as we speak, and I've been using this to supplement my book: http://knitwitch.com/videos.htm

:D

You can find some decent instructional vids on YouTube as well.

7. Those are good videos....
but I was hoping to learn how to hold the yarn in the left hand when doing Combined knitting.
:pals:
I may just have to try every thing I can think of, until I find something that works for me.

8. knitting videos......
I watched the knitwitch video and that is how I learned to knit 40 years ago and I'm still just as slow as I was then.
I watched the knittinghelp video and that is how my daughter knits and she has been working with me off and on
for a year and I still can't 'get it'.
I watched the craft sanity video and since she holds the yarn in almost the same way I do to crochet I am less clumsy
holding the yarn this way and think I will spend the next week or two trying this method.
Thanks to the people trying to help,
I can't find anything more on the combined knitting so I may have to give up on that one.

11. I just wrap it twice around the index finger
and have the strand across the palm, the other fingers controlling the tension.

It's not the official way to do it, but it works.
