APRIL FOOLS DAY: AN UNSOLVED HISTORY

The first of April, some do say,
Is set apart for All Fools' Day.
But why the people call it so,
Not I, nor they themselves do know.
But on this day are people sent
On purpose for pure merriment.
-- Poor Robin's Almanac (1790)

RED STAR RADIOSITE
http://oldradio.onego.ru/foy.htm

Before TV took over, families gathered around the radio, a tradition
that lingered longer in the former Soviet Union than many other parts of
the world. Though the 1940s saw many stylish cases, the 1950s were the
real golden age of Soviet radios. Vitaly Brousnikin's collection of
vintage radios also features vintage record players and their
predecessors, the gramophones, plus speakers and microphones.

SAY CHEESE!
http://www.photobooth.net

Although mostly relics of a bygone, pre-camera-phone era, old-fashioned
photo booths can still be found in malls, amusement parks, bars,
restaurants and museums. The booths were developed in the 1920s and have
remained in public use since then. At this site you'll find several
categories of resources delving into the world of the photo booth. They
chronicle their appearance in films & TV, show photo booth photos as
art, provide a gallery of photos and, among other things, give a link to
booth locations.

STREAMING CLASSIC FILMS FOR FREE
http://www.classiccinemaonline.com

Classic Cinema Online is free and you can view hundreds of full-length
classic films in dozens of categories ranging from action to westerns --
even old cinema shorts and news reels. There is even a selection of
silent pictures. A random sampling of movies currently on the site
include King Kong (1933), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Dr.
Strangelove (1964) and It's a Wonderful Life (1946). Only movies in the
public domain can be shown so this means the collection isn't nearly
complete. But more movies are being added all the time.

OH, FOR THE LOVE OF MARSHMALLOW
http://marshmallowpeeps.com/about/index.html

For over 50 years Marshmallow Peeps have been welcoming Easter and
marking the rite of spring to the delight of people around the world.
Over this time, Marshmallow Peeps have been born in new shapes, flavors
and colors, even wrapped in new packaging, but they still emanate the
nostalgic feelings of the past. Peeps, first handmade by Just Born in
1953, have multiplied into an entire dynasty of marshmallow treats for
different holidays, but Easter is still their biggest occasion. FYI:
Each Peep has 32 calories (160 calories per five-chick serving) and 0
fat grams.

ONE MORE TIME
http://www.jewelryconference.com

The Association for the Study of Jewelry & Related Arts presents its
fifth annual conference, One More Time: Jewelry Fakes, Revivals,
Recycling and Reproductions, May 15 in New York City. The Association is
an organization dedicated to the advancement of jewelry studies in
schools, museums, and institutions of higher learning.

VALUABLE JADE COLLECTION
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4eBWQaLmyE

For years, Antiques Roadshow has shown that knickknacks can often be
worth thousands of dollars. This woman's father had collected a few
pieces of jade in China and she had heard that some had imperial seals.
It turns out the pieces were of exquisite quality and you won’t believe
what they’re worth.

SNIFF OUT HIDDEN DEALS ON EBAY
http://www.typohound.com

Often, sellers misspell product names in their listings and they won't
show up on a normal eBay search. Fortunately, great deals could be just
a spelling error away. This site, TypoHound, allows you to enter the
correct name of a product and it generates a list of common spelling
errors for that product name. You might just find some excellent hidden
deals.

ZAP! POW! BAM!
http://comicconnect.com

A copy of the 1938 edition of Action Comics No. 1 sold Monday for $1.5
million. The issue features Superman's debut and is widely considered
the Holy Grail of comic books. The same issue sold in February for $1
million. That number was quickly bested when a 1939 comic book featuring
Batman's debut sold for $1 million and change.
