Dem Convention to focus on unity, security, change

By STEVEN K. PAULSON, Associated Press Writer Mon Aug 11, 4:22 PM ET

DENVER - Looking for clues on Barack Obama's pick for a running mate? Consider the Democratic convention's theme for the night the vice presidential candidate speaks: national security.

Political tea leaf readers would argue that bodes well for Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Joe Biden, D-Del.; Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, who accompanied Obama on his trip to Iraq and Afghanistan; and Sam Nunn, former Georgia senator and one-time Armed Services Committee chairman.

Democrats, who announced several of their speakers on Sunday, described their themes on Monday as well as plans for a series of town-hall meetings during the convention with elected leaders and policy experts. The convention begins Aug. 25.

"There's no question that Americans are desperately looking for change and new ways to conduct business in this country. They want a new direction, they want to know that their government has not forgotten them and their lives. We felt that the Democratic convention was a great way to kick off the momentum for change," said Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a co-chair of the convention who also has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential pick.

She said people in eight cities will be asked their views on nightly themes for the convention built around keynote speeches and convention speakers will respond live to issues and questions from participants. The cities are Atlanta; Columbus, Ohio; Denver; Detroit; Philadelphia; Raleigh, N.C.; Richmond, Va.; and Tampa — all are in potential swing states.

The theme for the Aug. 25 opening night will be "One Nation," with a speech by Michelle Obama. The Aug. 26 theme is "Renewing America's Promise" with a speech by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama's chief rival for the presidential nomination.

On Aug. 27, the theme is "Securing America's Future" with an acceptance speech by Obama's still-unannounced vice presidential candidate.

The theme for Aug. 28, the night Obama formally accepts the nomination at the Denver Broncos' football stadium, is "Change You Can Believe In."

1. I think we can assume
that the chosen one already knows, and had something to do with naming the theme of that night at the convention. That theme sounds like a theme conceived by JRB, doesn't it?

11. Oh, I'm quite sure that Obama and his soon-to-be
announced VP know and have known for a while.

The theme does sound more Biden than Bayh or Kaine.

3. Apparently "Securing America's Future" is the name of Clark's WesPAC,
Edited on Mon Aug-11-08 09:41 PM by gateley
which is what has fueled all the speculation about Clark, and resurrected him -- on the internet, anyway.

It doesn't say what Bill Clinton's speech will be on.

Securing America's Future certainly seems to place emphasis on SECURITY, and that would lead me to think Biden, Clark and Richardson.

I think Biden or Clark could steamroll over McCain's VP - whomever that may be. We all know Richardson's stage presence isn't all that commanding, unfortunately.

I just wish he'd DO IT and get it over with!

10. I just read he's the Homeland Security guy (was). NOW I know
why the name is familiar!

So do we have him to think for the government viewing our citizens as terrorists?

13. Actually Ridge is a bit more
moderate than this administration. One of the problems with putting him on the ticket is because he is pro-choice, not to mention he is relatively sane.

he's gotta woo back some of those evangelicals.

the pundits, but McCain is running such an awful campaign, who knows what he'll do.

14. Yeah, so THEN the argument is
"Obama only threw that out there as a Red Herring." It's nuts.

If it is Clark, I applaud Obama for going with him even after the flap caused by the press (and some Dems!) misconstruing his statement.

OH! And I got an e-mail from him today (I swear it was today, but now I can't find it anywhere). He was soliciting donations to help him hit the road and work to get Obama and other Dems elected. He said he was going to roll up his sleeves and get to work: I found that interesting since when he bowed out after the brouhaha, he said he was going to take a break from politics and just concentrate on his other stuff.

Now he's apparently back in the frey, and with this announcement of the speech title by the VP nom.... As Joe says, connect the dots.

I'd be very okay with Clark as VP. I don't think he could wow as many people as Joe, but I think he's an amazing impressive guy.

And that frees up Joe for the SOS slot. :7

19. So I've been thinking it's going to be Biden.
Why? Because he has said over and over again throughout the year that he never again would sit back and let the Repugs paint the Dems as weak on Security.

And, "Mr. Microphone" has been mighty quiet lately, hasn't he?

Think about it. When Bsh made that unfortunate comment in Israel, who was all over that?
Biden. He has been quite outspoken, until the last month. It's even more curious now while McSurge is using the events in Russia/Georgia to his advantage.

Me thinks Biden is laying low. And that is out of character for him.

21. Agree it makes tons of sense -- but the troubling question mark here is
why would Obama's campaign title the speech on VP Night the same name as Clark's WesPAC?

If it's Clark, they've pretty much given it away with that. If it's not, as I said, it's odd they would use the name of his committee.
(Don't know if you read in a previous post, but Clark sent out an e-mail saying he's back in the political pool to help elect Obama and other Dems in November. This, after he said he was leaving that arena for a while.)

I hope it's Clark so Joe can have his SOS position, but again, part of me hopes it's Joe because we NEED him. :banghead: Arrrrgh!

Here's a link to Clark's Securing America's Future.

22. That's a good question.
I would be very happy if it was Clark...and I agree that it is very curious how they used the name of Wes' PAC.

but I am baffled why Biden is so quiet right now after he has said over and over again that he would not let the repugs get away with painting the Dems weak.

Maybe, it's just because he knows he being vetted?

23. I think vetting Biden would be a snap --
he's pretty much an open book and lots of his financial stuff is easily accessible as a result of his run for Prez.

When the hell is Obama getting back, anyway? He must put an end to this speculation and anxiety! :7
