VP Biden says stimulus can't wait for GOP support

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday that the nearly $800 billion economic stimulus bill pending in Congress is too urgently needed to wait until it receives substantial Republican support.
Biden, a Democrat, was in Pennsylvania to drum up support for the legislation, just as negotiators for Congress and the White House reached agreement on a bill.
"We cannot and will not wait around to deal with the most urgent needs the economy has," Biden told reporters.
Before Wednesday's agreement, differing bills passed the Democratic-controlled House and Senate with just a few Republican votes.
The agreement announced by congressional leaders is for a $789 billion measure designed to create millions of jobs and benefits for recession victims and help states avoid the prospect of making deep budget cuts.
Biden said he expects the final legislation will attract votes from Republicans who did not support it in earlier forms.
Still, he dismissed questions about a lack of bipartisan support.
"I don't think any of those people getting those jobs are going to care" who voted for it, Biden said.
