U.S Experts Admire Orthopedics in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, April 10 (acn) A group of American experts attending an international conference on orthopedics in Havana, highlighted the development of the medical specialty.

In statements to ACN, U.S orthopedists Gene Muse and William Bryan, who are part of the thirty specialists from that country participating in the event, expressed their interest in building a friendship bridge between both nations and sharing the experiences on orthopedics, specifically on knee and hip arthroscopy.

They said the theoretical and practical course held this week in several institutions across the country was very important because experts from other nations including France and Switzerland and locals had the opportunity to exchange their knowledge of the medical field.

The American experts agreed on the fact that orthopedics in Cuba and its experts are on a very high level and they said they are interested in contributing with equipment to the its further development because, they noted the most important thing is to take care of the health of our peoples.

Over the past few years, including on this particular occasion, those experts have donated surgical equipment used mainly in arthroscopy operations, which are less invasive than regular procedures and favor the speedy recovery of patients. The technique is also less expensive and has been extended throughout the country with very positive results.

Gene Muse, a great friend of Cuba, has visited the island eight times. He emphasized his desire to continue supporting the Caribbean nation, which, in spite of limitations caused by the U.S blockade imposed for nearly half a century, has become an international point of reference.

Cuba's Medical Care for the Disabled Praised
http://www.cadenagramonte.cubaweb.cu/english/news/april_09/100409_04.asp
Havana, April 10.- Cuba's medical care for the disabled was praised on Thursday by Luis Fernando Astorga, Executive Director for Latin America at the Inter-American Institute on Disability and Inclusive Development.

Speaking to Radio Rebelde in Havana, the expert said that the disabled in Cuba enjoy a lot of respect and added that there is great commitment to them among the people and by the government.

In addition, he praised the work of all Cuban State organizations that design policies, strategies, programs and services to improve the quality of life of the disabled and facilitate their social integration.

According to the specialist, people with incapacities are often discriminated against in many countries of Latin America. "They are denied their basic human rights," he noted.

Astorga stressed that many countries and societies have not been able to

effectively advance in the struggle against the violations of these people's human rights.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are nearly 650 million disabled people in the world today. (RHC-ACN)
