Pres. Obama ends first year with 57 percent approval average
By Tony Romm - 01/18/10 10:53 AM ET

President Barack Obama will round out his first year in office with an average 57 percent approval rating, according to Gallup.

Interestingly enough, that would place Obama nearly last on a ranking of former presidents' first-year job approval averages, pollsters noted.

Former Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush all ended their first year in office with much higher job approval totals. Only former President Ronald Reagan tied Obama, also scoring 57 percent, while former President Bill Clinton scored far below Obama, at 49 percent.

6. And also not bad considering the racist element in the South
They're skewing his polls by at least -10% nationally.

15. True, but I've seen polls that ignore the south..
and Obama's approval numbers are in the low 70's.

2. So W went from 90%+ after 9/11 to less than 70% four months later?
And they talk about Obama's single digit decline as some indicator of failure. :eyes:

4. No - the number is the average of all the polls over the year
In Bush's case, his number was pulled up by the incredibly high numbers for those last 3 months. Otherwise, Before that, the pattern looked like he could end up being with Clinton or lower.

3. Obama is facing an even worse economy then Reagan. And politics is very
polarized right now.

7. I'm adjusting my grading scale for midterms....
...to take this into account.

Obama is a failure. (Hey, that's what I keep hearing, even on this board, or especially on this board.)
Failure is 57%
Passing grades begin at 58%.

The students will be thrilled. They just got a 13% curve.

I always give Obama and The Democrats the HIGHEST marks possible in any public poll.

Privately (and on DU) I am BEYOND disgusted, am changing my party affiliation to "Independent", and will actively support a "LIBERAL" challenger in 2012.

I suspect I am not the only disgusted Democrat who STILL gives Obama HIGH marks in polls.
This 57% is very weak.

14. Admit it Bvaar. If this were 1933
you'd be supporting Huey Long and castigating FDR as tool a of the bankers and industrialists. I sense a Southern populist flame in your
heart.

9. Seriously he started at 53% after his election last November
And to have had to handle everything he has had to deal with in the last year.. I think that is off the charts good.
