33. This is all very heart warming.
Woohoo, universal health care, finally. No more medical bankruptcies. The days of unaffordable, low quality, high premium, high co-pay, low expectations are over! The insurance folks are going to have to create new ways to screw us, we sucker punched em good, they aren't getting back up if they know what is good for them.

Prove it to us, you insiders and Dem "leaders," give the American people what they need when you get done with all the backslapping and high fives. What's that? This was the best we could hope for? This really was good enough? You all have better things to do? Grayson's Bill was just for shits and giggles? Shame on me.

35. +10.
SOmething like 22 million still left uncovered (but even many of those "covered" won't be able to afford to use the crappy insurance they're forced to buy) and there will still be medical bankruptcies aplenty (a term which is UNHEARD of in all other developed nations).

Somehow I don't think this is what Kennedy had in mind. He wanted universal health CARE.

38. I understand the family having these moments. I dislike the voyeurism.
Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 12:57 AM by Mithreal
I have family too and while Teddy is dead, my family still has to suffer from the cowardice of the Democratic Party to deliver actual reform. I like the nibbles, they'll save lives but they are damn far removed from our goals.

Here's another way to see it. Your country is at war. The enemy wants to kill thousands more but you make a deal to pay them off and allow them to keep killing but at a lower rate. Doesn't seem right. The insurance industry serves no purpose but to skim dollars from care. They are immune to shaming, have no ethics or morality and the main function is profit accumulation.

How many have died from lack of health care in the last decade? A half million, maybe? Those are genocide scale numbers, no? But since they came from the lower and middle classes, they are tolerable collateral damage. We have to be concerned about the Insurance Industry profits, wouldn't be prudent to go to the source of the problem when people will be satisfied with bandaids.

We haven't fixed the underlying causes for lack of access to health care. How many people will still have access problems and not only be underinsured but remain uninsured because even with subsidies it will still be unaffordable.

Who dies tomorrow from lack of care? Obama and Dem leaders increased access to insurance for the most part. You can shed a tear for Teddy but I would be willing to bet he would rather have you remember those he fought for, the significantly less fortunate.

My comment should feel like a kick in the pants. The grave note was touching but I AM CONCERNED WITH THE LIVING. You should be too. Where are the tears for all those whose names you will never know. It isn't about a dead Senator and a grave side note however touching. He would tell you the same, I am sure.

Yes it does say so much about me that I would speak when unwelcome. Is it too soon? He didn't die last week. Focus on the living, those who are less fortunate. This bill was a step but unless we get some regular and real upgrades soon, we may not have opportunity to fix it while this movement still has momentum. Yeah, I am bad. Please focus on what he taught us. A better memorial would have been to keep a strong Progressive in his seat and be honest about what this bill is as much as what it represents. I like Skinner's idea that it is a promise for the future, that's cool, but this is one of those promises we need to deliver on and soon. My anger, yes, I am angry, comes mainly from so many DU'ers acting satisfied by what just happened and making what almost seems to me to be a mockery of his memory. I get it that the family feels it was good enough. Our obligations should be to the living and let this family have its private moments. Haven't they earned it? What you may not understand about my post is that our voyeurism is practically vulgar to me. Does that make any sense.
