Ginny-Brown Waite drops out of re-election citing health problems

Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite, R-Brooksville, is abandoning her re-election bid.

"As I have prepared for my campaign, I have been troubled by persistent health problems and have come to the disappointing and sad conclusion that I cannot run for reelection. There are simply too many unresolved issues around my health and my pancreas in particular. As of this morning, my doctors are still undecided about what course to pursue next for my treatments."

Brown-Waite immediately backed Hernando County Sheriff Richard Nugent.

"I encouraged Sheriff Nugent to run because I know him to be a strong conservative who will continue my fight for veterans and seniors. This past week Rich told me he would stand in my place for election to Congress. On Monday I will to ask the Secretary of State to withdraw my name from the ballot.

"As I go forward with my medical treatments, I would continue to ask for your prayers for my family and me.”

1. "...strong conservative who will continue my fight for veterans and seniors."
Right, conservatives always support liberal causes.

6. She's pissed off some fellow Republicans who were eying her seat, as well.
Fasano questions Brown-Waite's political ploy

When Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite decided not to run for re-election at the last second Friday and hand-pick her Republican successor, it targeted one person: Mike Fasano.

The state senator from Pasco County has eyed the seat for a long time and has only two years left in the Legislature. Those close to him say Fasano -- who isn't Brown-Waite's best friend -- is bristling at her political ploy.

In an interview, Fasano acknowledged it was "questionable."

"It is something I hope the constituents will be asking Sheriff Nugent and also I think it gives a blemish to politics and maybe also to the party itself," he said.

As for whether he was interested in running, "it was certainly something I would have looked at," he continued. "However, as you know and Sheriff (Richard) Nugent knows, if he were to be the winner, it's the Legislature that will be drawing the Congressional seats of the next two years."

State Sen. Paula Dockery, who represents part of the district but lives in a different one, called the move "sneaky."

"They should have given people the opportunity to file," she said.
