Obama to return to the Gulf of Mexico - again
By Anne E. Kornblut

President Obama will make his most extensive trip to the gulf coast yet, visiting Mississippi, Alabama and Florida on Monday and Tuesday of next week, the White House announced late Tuesday.

He will "further assess the latest efforts to counter the BP oil spill," the White House said.

The trip, his fourth trip to the region, fills a scheduling hole created when Obama canceled a trip to Indonesia. And it comes as the administration is trying to step up its engagement in the oil spill once more, a challenge that has persisted in the 50 days since the oil rig exploded and sank.

1. He might as well just buy a beach house there to be a second White House
Not that it would make much difference, but it would make people feel good, and the media seems to want him to do that.

2. For anyone on the right who thinks that Obama isn't spending
enough time down on the Gulf dealing with the crisis, I would like to remind them that George H.W. Bush made NOT ONE VISIT to Alaska during the EXXON VALDEZ disaster and only sent potatoe-head Dan Quayle after six weeks, who basically gave a thumbs-up and said everything was going great.

Just a bit of history...

6. Oh you
talking about history and stuff.

Seriously, President Obama has already spent more time in the Gulf than * Junior did during Katrina. For some it's still not enough...

8. Really? I had no idea. But I was 12 then so...
I know W. did go to LA after Katrina but he handled it so badly I guess none of us noticed. I saw in an article the other day it was like 6 times.

14. You should add for anyone on the left and DU who thinks...
Because many here say he's not doing enough, showing leadership, and in some cases---he caused the spill.

12. Clio...many won't be satisfied unless he put on his swim gear and plugged the hole himself.
That's the point of it all. They want Obama to go down there and plug the hole. Manage to take all the oil out of the ocean, resurrect all the fish, and when he has time pass the laws to destroy oil companies all together and force all people in the US not to buy petroleum based products. <---If they have cars...fuck it--they don't need them. They are willing to go back to horse and buggy.

He should live *inside* the hole. That's the minimum.

10. Obama will be the scapegoat for the "spill"
Because that's how people are and history has proven it time and time again. LBJ was blamed for Viet Nam. Carter was blamed for the hostage crisis. Bush was blamed for Katrina (but not 9/11 like he should have been). Deepwater Horizon will be up at the top with Viet Nam in terms of long term lasting negative impacts on a Presidency.

President Obama will not be blamed for cause, but for effect. I think we know who caused the "spill" - clearly it was BP and the lax regulatory envirnment created by 8 years of Republican influence. But, President Obama was at the helm when the event occurred. Now, weeks/months later we are just starting to really SEE it. The anger will grow over time, not diminish. There will be job losses, the coastal habitat will be a gaping raw wound, the long terms effects we can only guess at. One thing people haven't mentioned as yet as far as I can tell is that billions of dollars of equity in coastal properties has just evaporated.

The coulda/woulda/shouldas will grow by the day. Why weren't tankers deployed immediately by all the world's oil companies to begin a giant skimming operation? Why was the Coexit allowed to be used? Why wasn't the drilling platform treated like a crime scene, which it essentially was? Why is BP still seemingly in charge despite their track record of negligence and neglect and recklessness?

Was the response of the administration adequate to the needs of the situation? What do you honestly think? If George Bush were in charge right now and did exactly the same things as President Obama, would you be satisfied or disatisfied?
