Newt Gingrich offers conservatives' hateful reaction to the ruling overturning Prop 8
Via Think Progress:

Reaction from Newt Gingrich: "Judge Walker's ruling overturning Prop 8 is an outrageous disrespect for our Constitution and for the majority of people of the United States who believe marriage is the union of husband and wife. In every state of the union from California to Maine to Georgia, where the people have had a chance to vote they've affirmed that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. Congress now has the responsibility to act immediately to reaffirm marriage as a union of one man and one woman as our national policy. Today’s notorious decision also underscores the importance of the Senate vote tomorrow on the nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court because judges who oppose the American people are a growing threat to our society."

Whenever conservatives invoke the Constitution to frame their self-declared moral superiority, they never consider the moral struggles that the Founding Fathers were engaged in even as they tried to do right by the country. This country has come a long way, but this and the birthright issue are reminders that Republicans haven't.

Talking Points Memo: Fundamental

We're still making our way through the decision, but the overall tone isn't a compromising or equivocal one. Here's a sampling:

Because slaves were considered property of others at the time, they lacked the legal capacity to consent and were thus unable to marry. After emancipation, former slaves viewed their ability to marry as one of the most important new rights they had gained.

2. The Constitution is a living and breathing document, which is what they are always wrong on.

If we couldn't touch anything in the Constitution then blacks would still be considered 3/5ths of white people and Senators would not be voted in by the public. Oh wait, Rethugs want to change that one.

8. Well! I think I posted a little something about that this morning, about

9. I have surely looked and I can't find anything in the Constitution
that says anything about marriage. I think the founding fathers thought they would let us choose our own mates.
