Gibbs: START will be done by Christmas
Gibbs: START will be done by Christmas
By Jordan Fabian - 12/01/10 07:08 AM ET

A long-stalled nuclear arms treaty with Russia will be ratified before Christmas, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Wednesday.

Gibbs expressed confidence that optimistic statements from two Republican senators Tuesday indicate that the GOP is ready to cooperate with Democrats and authoritze the new Strategic Nuclear Arms Reducton Treaty (START).

"Harry, the START treaty will be done by Christmas," Gibbs said on CBS's "Early Show."

The chances of passage for START during the lame-duck session seemed grim just days ago in the face of near-uniform Republican objections to the pact, but Gibbs's comments show the tide could be turning.

The votes of 67 senators are needed to ratify the treaty.

1. Working America will be done by Christmas, too
We'll be done receiving the fruits of the brilliant deal that cuts taxes on the rich in exchange for the START treaty. This is a huge win for the middle class: of course we get fewer nuclear weapons, but more important: we get to keep the prosperity of the Bush years.

Great stuff.

2. "These aren't the droids you're looking for."
Surely, this news is actually not good news. Couldn't be.

Spin. Spin. Spin.

3. Brilliant isn't it.
Amazing how the Dems have recaptured their resolve. Must be a result of all that Jello they're eating to stiffen their backbone. :sarcasm: off.

6. Bet that meeting yesterday accomplished more than just...
.... the decision to hold more meetings.

Oh, to have been a fly on the wall.

7. That's good, but more urgent are the jobless Americans who need benefits
especially at Christmas.
