The woman who stands between us and the abyss

Nancy's the last remaining firewall between the insane-right and working America - let's hope those fists in the picture are preparing for an uppercut into Boehner. She is in my prayers.

1. Go, Nancy!
Very impressive and heartening maneuver yesterday. : )
May she lend some of her backbone to Dems in Senate and White House

3. Our Speaker is awesome
The symbolism of our first woman Speaker being so tough and effective has warmed my heart.

4. I have garnered more respect for her in the past few months.
Unfortunately, due to the non/shallow/negative coverage of her in our supposed "liberal biased media" I have known very little about her. No wonder the right wingers hate her so much: because she is a strong effective democratic leader.

9. Let's just hope it's not more charades.
Sorry to be so cynical, but after watching healthcare reform and other legislative theater, it seems pretty clear that much of the time, they coordinate to allow some reps to present more liberal postures, knowing it won't change the ultimate outcome, which is an agreed-upon a foregone conclusion.

15. I'm glad she is a DU hero now
At least one Democrat is. Is it the fists that inspired this? I know there is an obsession with "fighting." But you have to realize she's not really going to punch anyone.

You do realize what would be made of a photo of Obama in that pose?

18. Wrong, it's actually Reid who will be stopping Republicans...
Nancy will really have no power to influence much of anything as House minority leader.

The majority can run roughshod over the minority in the House of Representatives - especially when the majority has such a large numerical advantage. Come January, Pelosi simply won't have the power to stop the Republicans at all.

It will be Reid who will be using his slim majority (53D-47R) in the Senate to stop the wackiness coming out of the House.

24. Yeah....I know...
..sad isn't it.

To be fair, it really is vastly harder to get things done in the Senate. The Speaker of the House has a much easier time moving legislation than the Senate Majority leader.

Also, keep in mind, all it takes is 1 Senator to gum up the works in the Senate, and many of our conservadem Senators side with the Republicans pretty regularly. There really isn't a lot Reid can do when Landrieu, Nelson, etc, etc are busy siding with the GOP on major issues.

25. Very true...
but one thing that needs to come back is the REAL filibuster. If the pukes wanna filibuster, make them read phone books for days on end.

27. Your echoing the myth of the filibuster...
There is absolutely no way the Democrats can actually make Republicans read the phone book or anything else for days on end. All it takes is one Republican to keep guard on the floor and call for the absence of a quorum anytime the Democrats tried to call a vote. If the GOP has 41 votes, they will block cloture and sustain the filibuster.

Someone posted this here earlier and it might help dispel some of the wrong ideas you may have about the filibuster:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/23/the-myth-of-the-filibuste_n_169117.html

From the article:

"'You cannot force senators to talk during a filibuster,' says Dove. 'Delay in the Senate is not difficult and, frankly, the only way to end it is through cloture.'"

20. Taxing the very rich will reduce the deficit
those earning under $250,000 can get a break spend more thus stimulating the economy. I guess those earning $251,000 per year won't be pleased!

Wait till the President works out a deal on tax cuts with Republicans.

The "I've disowned Obama" threads will be legion. President will be under the bus for at least a few days.

29. I remember DU cursing her to the hellfire of damnation at one time
Come to think of it, it was only 3 or 4 years ago.

But I must say, during the HCR debate and ever since, she's been a fighter.

It's a damn shame she chose to fight NOW under a Dem President, but you take what you can get.
