White House officials are looking into how their embargo on the news of president’s trip to Afghanistan was broken this morning, leading to erroneous reports that he was in the country before he had actually arrived, POLITICO’s Carol E. Lee reports.
Lee was assigned to write the pool report for the trip, which was embargoed until the president actually touched down because of security concerns -- a common practice for presidential trips to war zones.
“It seems WH officials traveling with the president did not know that news outlets had been reporting that POTUS had arrived in Afghanistan before he had arrived, until AF1 was wheels down at Bagram,” Lee wrote in the latest pool report. “The erroneous reporting about POTUS being in Afghanistan when he was not is being looked into by the WH because of security concerns.”
Lee reported that Air Force One first touched down in Kabul at 8:35 p.m. local time, or 11: 05 a.m. on the East Coast, but the news of the president’s arrival in the country had already been reported at 10:49 a.m. ET by ABC News. CNN and MSNBC followed suit soon afterwards.
Because of technical problems, Lee was not able to file the pool report until 20 minutes after the plane had touched down, causing some confusion in the press cabin particularly after news began to filter in that the president’s trip was already being reported.
