Obama Pardons 66 Yr Old Ex-Marine made Pennies into Dimes

When Ronald Lee Foster, 66, of Beaver Falls, tried to apply for a gun permit about two years ago, he was shocked when he was denied because he was a felon.

The retired shift supervisor at Armstrong World Industries had no idea why they would say he had a felony conviction, but then he started thinking about what had seemed like a small offense from almost 50 years ago.

In 1963, then-18-year-old Mr. Foster and 16 of his fellow Marines were stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and only making $82 a month. They wanted a way to come up with some spare change, so they started cutting off the outer lips of pennies and using them as dimes in the vending machines.

Their luck ran out when a Secret Service agent was put in the barracks, Mr. Foster said, probably because the vending company had caught on.

He's definitely talking about getting a permit to carry concealed. Unless it was sloppy writing and what he was denied was ability to purchase a handgun & he was denied by NICS.

Here's another story:

He returned from a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam, got a job as a steelworker at the Babcock & Wilcox plant in Beaver Falls, got married, had a son, served as chief of the Patterson Township Volunteer Fire Department and sat on the township's zoning board.

Then, about three years ago, he applied for a handgun permit and learned he was a felon.

"I'm 60-some years old. I don't want to die with a felony hanging over my head," Foster said.

He tried to have it expunged, only to learn felonies can't be expunged. So in April 2008, Foster's lawyer, Gregory Douglass of Beaver, filed a petition for a presidential pardon.
