Lyndon Johnson: "A HOUSE DIVIDED CANNOT STAND!" His Resignation Speech:
Lyndon B. Johnson - Declares Not to Seek Re-election

I Can See Obama giving this Speech...he's not Reagan....he's JOHNSON! Read it...so many of you are too young to know this...when Johnson decided not to RUN for RE-Election.

Obama is a Man of Principle...I can see him saying what Johnson says in this speech. ALL YOU WHO DO
NOT KNOW about JOHNSON...need to WATCH THIS...

I remember watching this speech on live TV, it was on March 31, 1968. When he said that he would not be running for President again, it was a real bombshell, even though he was very unpopular by this time due to the Vietnam war. Whether you were for him or against him, he was an amazing man and probably the most accomplished politician ever to live in the White House. For me, he is one of the major icons of the 1960's, I can still hear him saying his favorite phrase: "My fellow Americans"

Today was a game-changer. Many people were willing to give Obama the benefit of the doubt, but no longer.

This is not a game changer and not another Obama's Katrina. You live here too long, you should go out for a while.

29. If he keeps going down the path he's going...I think he should do a Johnson...
Yes! Unless he finds new advisers ...and can get back the "message" he ran on and find some core principle he won't "COMPROMISE AWAY"...then YES...he needs to step back. He's causing "A HOUSE DIVIDED THAT WILL NOT STAND."

I do think...if he can't support Democratic Ideals...he needs to resign.

31. 80%+ of Democrats say he's doing a good job.
Surely, they believe he supports their ideals. And his speech today will solidify those beliefs.

Perhaps you should re-consider exactly who is out of step.

40. At This Point...Who can even BELIEVE the Paid for Polls? Should We? One Poll?
After all the "Banksters" on Wall Street are Propped up with Media Propaganda..so why should we believe anything after EIGHT YEARS OF BUSH...who WON on STOLEN ELECTION...and VOTING MACHINES that were never fixed.

I would believe anything Conspiracy...to a point..these days. I've never seen anything like this ..how the corruption has grown and feeds on itself...and WE.."The CITIZENS" are marginalized, cut out, and thrown out like GARBAGE! I grew up during the 1960's...a TIME OF REVOLUTION...it's very hard to deal remembering the wonderful ALTRUISM of that time in our history and what we accomplished. To see ALL OF IT GO DOWN...Women treated like Whores and enjoying it, TWO NEW WARS after the VIETNAM was thoroughly Trashed...and Joblessness and Sorrow all across our land...and the RICH GET RICHER...and a DEMOCRAT (supported by other Democrats) ENJOY IT! Tell us it's a GOOD THING...TELL US THAT WE NEED TO COMPROMISE ...MORE AND MORE AND MORE.

He simply recognized that he could not win, that he had lost the country over the escalation of the conflict in Vietnam. So he declined to run again.

have called it quits in 1996. After all, he promised health care reform, and saw it go down to spectacular defeat--and never revived it.

19. Sadly Bill...got compromised after "surviving MONICA" the Repugs Rolled him...
Clinton Orchestrated demise of "Glass-Steagall Act" that loosened regulation put in place since the Great Depression by FDR..that allowed this MELTDOWN that allowed the BANKSTERS TO ROB OUR US TREASURY and CAUSE CRASH of the "RECESSION/DEPRESSION" we are now faced with...and check out on GOOGLE the "COMMODITIES MODERNIZATION ACT" (by CLINTON ADMIN) and the "DEREG of INTERNET" that was disguised as a clever BILL that he signed that would set the future DECLINE of the INTERNET.

GOOGLE: "CLINTON AND the INTERNET" and see what you come up with.

After MONICA "snapped her thong and the RW went against him" he was told "SHAPE UP ...OR SHIP OUT" in IMPEACHMENT! Clinton dutifully Obeyed and chose to stay after he gave Repugs/Banksters all they wanted and now they JUST "LOVE'S ME SOME CLINTON!"

Do you hear how the Finacial Media Fall all over Clinton as if they HADN'T TRASHED HIM ALMOST TO DEATH FOR YEARS?

Has Anyone even wondered how the HATED CLINTONS have REGAINED their REPUTATION...in recent Years? After what the COUNTRY WENT THROUGH WITH THE EXTREME MEDIA?

You don't COME BACK LIKE THAT...unless you've sold your soul to a DEVIL. THINK ABOUT IT!

26. Johnson was a "Piece of Work" but...he did understand...He'd Done Wrong and Time for Him to Go!
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 08:32 PM by KoKo
I watched that speech live...Had kids from my High School class die in Vietnam...and some of them had scholarships to colleges ...they'd worked so hard to get..(they were Kerosene Kids) and their "High Draft Number) shipped them off their to have their heads blown off. A couple came home crippled...they lived but died in their souls.

I can't imagine what's coming home today. The broken spirts, bodies and lives...

At that time I HATED LYNDON JOHNSON FOR WHAT HE HAD DONE...

But, I was very glad he resigned...and he should have.. But, I give CREDIT TO JOHNSON...He knew he'd FLUBBED UP and KILLED INNOCENTS. (WAR PROTESTERS LET HIM KNOW) He RESIGNED...we've not had an honorable one like him since then. (Carter had good instincts and got trashed..if he'd been able to have second term...he might have been great...but "THEY GOT HIM")

But, Johnson did incredible work on Civil Rights fulfilling Jack Kennedy and Johnson's (secret dream to restore some EQUALITY for Americans) Johnson did much good, pushing through what he did...but that WAR was listening to ADVISORS...he was WEAK on the WAR...and he resigned properly.

I hope Obama has the moral courage to do the same.

30. Johnson decided to not run after Cronkite's famous "mired in stalemate" broadcast from Feb. 27, 1968
AUDIO - http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106775685

"I've lost Cronkite. I've lost middle America."

Today, we have no Cronkite. And it wouldn't matter if we did. This is nothing like that. Obama is nothing like LBJ.

36. Mired in Stalemate and "losing Middle America." ...I would Worry Obama would find the same thing.
although the "middle" has shifted...who knows in two years after what we are seeing it might shift back to a Dem Middle not a "Rupug Light Middle." Who knows. Right now though, some of have been through this before see signs that are not good...unless Obama shifts course and decides to stand up and fight for Principles...that seemed defined in his Campaign but somehow got thrown out the window after the Inauguration. He just isn't that same man who ran as who we are seeing as President...unless one can wear tinted glasses or has such a faith and hope that it won't hit them until the BIG REALITY hits the fan.

I put that all away and voted for Obama.

I don't think I've ever seen you reply to any of my posts...but if you check me out...I've not been partisan over anyone except Al Gore...and always have supported Kucinich even though I knew he couldn't be elected, I still defend him here.

I was Never a Hillary supporter, though. If that's what you are somehow confusing me with. I can understand why she had a following and never trashed those who supported her. She was too hawkish for me.

42. Obama is no Lyndon Johnson, although I understand the spirit of your OP.
Lyndon Johnson was a monster when it comes to his great transgression in Vietnam.

Lyndon Johnson was a leader when it comes to Medicare, the Civil Rights Act & the Voting Rights Act.

I frankly do not see where Obama has made much of a change that is noteworthy thus far.

I think, what you are cryptically driving at within your OP is that Obama should ponder LBJ's speech. I'm sure it's crossed his mind.
