It's not just the left... GOP fracturing also. I guess Obama touched some nerves?
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/12/two-major-conservative-obstacles-emerge-to-tax-cut-compromise.php?ref=fpblg

Two key obstacles emerged Tuesday night to the passage of President Obama's tax cut compromise with the GOP. Except this time they come from the right: The influential anti-tax group Club for Growth and conservative kingmaker Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) both came out in opposition to the agreement, threatening the breadth of Republican support for the plan.

"This is bad policy, bad politics, and a bad deal for the American people," said Club President Chris Chocola in a statement. "The plan would resurrect the Death Tax, grow government, blow a hole in the deficit with unpaid-for spending, and do so without providing the permanent relief and security our economy needs to finally start hiring and growing again."

"Instead, Congress should pass a permanent extension of current rates, including a permanent repeal of the death tax, and drop all new spending," Chocola said. "A month ago, the American people repudiated Washington big government. It's time for both parties to finally hear that message and act on it."

3. Yeah, of course their idea to fix it all is complete B.S.
"Instead, Congress should pass a permanent extension of current rates, including a permanent repeal of the death tax, and drop all new spending,"

Drop what new spending? There's no two ways about it. To get away from insolvency, the tax cuts need to go, and the defense budget has to be severely cut. These asses like DeMint and Chocola don't care, b/c their end goal is to destroy Social Security, education and anything else with a socialist nature.

I dunno if you noticed, but he's a bit late to the party

I would hardly say he's "first" -- he's even further to the right of McConnell on this. And how does McConnell respond to dissent in the GOP ranks? This could become very interesting, if not even more devastating for the economy and the unemployed.

5. I'm not surprised.
However, I don't think this is Obama's chessmanship. DeMint can hear the tea kettle screaming and Limbaugh raging. The real leaders of the Republic Party don't like this anymore than a majority of people here at DU. I suspect this will go down to defeat in the House and Senate, and the lame duck congress will end.

13. Yes, that is trute...But Republicans will polish this turd...
and a majority will accept it no matter what.

If taxes go up, Obama and Democrats enacted the greatest tax increase in history.
If taxes stay the same, Republicans protected your money, and Democrats have enacted a monstrous spending bill.

Really, Democrats need to buy a few media outlets and use them for propaganda, as the Republicans have if they want to even the playing field.

8. Well ya gotta take this with a grain of salt
Some people, if Obama said he was for sunshine in the mornings, they would immediately come out against it. Funny they get what they want, but since Obama says "deal" they are now against it.

14. That's why it's called a compromise
There's something for everyone to dislike. It just depends if you're idealistic or realistic.
