House likely to pass reworked tax deal: aide

House likely to pass reworked tax deal: aide

(Reuters) - The House of Representatives will likely pass next week, with some changes, the framework of President Barack Obama's plan to extend tax cuts, a senior Democratic aide said on Friday.

The aide said that House Democrats intend to tighten the estate tax provisions in the Senate bill prior to the House vote on the package. The House will likely begin consideration of the measure within days of its anticipated passage next week in the Senate, the aide said.

Why all the public drama?

1. I hope they can make some changes to the Estate Tax portion.
It is, IMO, the most odious part of the tax / stimulus compromise.

Regarding the public drama, again just my opinion, mix in 1 part media hysterics, 2 parts political grandstanding, and 3 parts genuine liberal anger and disappointment for a public drama cocktail.

I am pleased that the unemployment benefits look like they will be extended. This will be of direct help to many I know, and of indirect help to us all.

2. Because they're a bunch of drama queens. And they looked like they're
the ones who caved after all the hyperbole and name calling.

3. And they'd better make sure it can still get past Senate filibuster
because they're going to look pretty damned foolish if it gets knocked back.

5. If they make changes they better vote for it.

Making changes and still largely relying on Republican votes for passage in the House is a recipe for failure.

Not to mention the House bill's prospects of passing the Senate....

6. I wonder how the cost of the expanded estate tax deal compares with the ethanol tax credit.
The estate tax expanded from $3.5 to $5 million and from 45% down to 35% will cost a loss of about $12 billion to the treasury each of the two years.
