Return Fire: House Dems Attempt to Block Obama's Ability to Close Git'mo

Dems show signs of abandoning Obama elsewhere after frustration with tax deal

By Susan Crabtree - 12/09/10 11:31 PM ET
Incensed over President Obama’s tax compromise, House Democratic leaders are showing signs of abandoning the administration and going their own way on critical issues such as national security.

In a striking move, the appropriations committee late Wednesday attached a provision to a $1.1 trillion resolution to keep the government funded next year that would prevent Obama from spending any funds to try terrorism suspects in civilian court instead of military commissions.

The language would essentially prevent the closing of the detainee prison at Guantanamo Bay.

Some House Democrats viewed the move as an act of defiance and a direct demonstration of just how furious the caucus is with Obama’s decision to work with Republicans to extend the Bush-era tax cuts.

But many other Democrats, including Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.), a member of the defense appropriations subcommittee, said they didn’t even know the provision was included.

1. Dems want to block closing Gitmo?
What is going on here? Interesting how they are spinning this, too, to blame Obama.

8. They have lost there minds
The anger is being used as an excuse to bring him down. Something is going on here that I have never seen in politics. His own party is trying to take him down. They aren't just mad about the tax deal they are up to something else entirely. They want to ruin him for 2012. They want him to lose. They don't know how to govern they just know how to complain and that was easy to do under Bush.

20. Nice ot see you
:-) I'm looking at it differently - I'm angry about this whole hot mess. Seriously - but . . .

I 'get' what they are doing. President Obama has said he doesn't like having to do xyz but . . . . and now this is their "I don't like having to do this but I'm going to stick it to you until I get what I want."

I'm wondering why the talking heads/so-called media outlets are not heavily publicizing a Closed Door Deal Meeting with Democratic party members in the House and Senate? Is one not going to occur?

11. They're the ones who didn't move on the tax issue before the elections--
NOW they're mad, they want all sorts of time and leeway to start figuring out the issue, and in the meantime the rest of the lame duck agenda is suffering. And now they're getting back at him through an unrelated national security issue? That's unreal. No better than Republicans with the START treaty.

13. The House passed a stand-alone tax cut for the middle class last week.
It was shot down in the Senate because they only got 57 of the 60 votes needed to pass. If you want to blame someone for this, blame the republicans and Blue Dogs in the Senate.

16. I know that. I have been explaining that to people all week, in fact.
What I'm saying is that the time for tantrums is over. But they're going to stage one anyway--and holding the closing of Gitmo hostage to spite Obama is a tantrum, and a sign that they are not operating in good faith.

15. I seriously doubt any Dem wants to keep Gitmo open.
I think the House is playing hardball with Obama, giving him a taste of his own medicine. He usurped their role in the law making dept, so they usurped his in the executive dept. They're just exchanging nasty surprises, showing him that they can play his game. Looks like they at least got his attention; however, if he's willing to make certain concessions, they'll probably drop this provision.

17. The Way I see This Act
Since Obama is giving in to the teapublicans anyway and his excuse for doing so is that the teapubicans will be taking over next year, the dems might as well make the whole damn caving much easier for Obama by putting forward the teapublican established preferences in the bills they are enacting - that way Obama can go forward looking for other things to compromise with them about.

Maybe the dream of a permanent Republican majority isn't dead yet. Cue the inept Dems to keep it afloat.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

President Obama is increasingly looking like the only adult in Washington.

Who in their right mind would oppose the president on this?

Do they want Guantanamo Bay to stay open so they have something to whine about to Obama?

35. Using the people trapped in Gitmo to get back at Obama
Is not right. Democrats or Republicans, that is not right.

It tends to get to be about the power struggle, rather than the real people. I guess we can thank the media for that.

39. President Obama is the only adult in a room full of children worried about reelection. The only
thing that gets Congress worked up into a froth is reelction. We need more practical politicians willing to work solely for the people not themselves.

The circle jerk has been going on here at DU and in Congress for a while.

43. You needed to find a month-old thread to make that point?
"Return Fire" in the title of the OP is a cliche. The OP has no violent undertones, is not part of a pattern and an anonymous person on the Internet is not a high-profile media figure or politician.

Another cliche used in this thread: "circular firing squad."

That's not hateful rhetoric, it's a cliche. No one in their right mind would consider a dicussion in which the term "circular firing squad" is used related to criticism as violent rhetoric.

What next: searching for a thread that includes the word "target"?

FYI, George Packer

<...>

This relentlessly hostile rhetoric has become standard issue on the right. (On the left it appears in anonymous comment threads, not congressional speeches and national T.V. programs.) And it has gone almost entirely uncriticized by Republican leaders. Partisan media encourages it, while the mainstream media finds it titillating and airs it, often without comment, so that the gradual effect is to desensitize even people to whom the rhetoric is repellent. We’ve all grown so used to it over the past couple of years that it took the shock of an assassination attempt to show us the ugliness to which our politics has sunk.

<...>

Hope that helps.
