The Senate still needs to pass the repeal of DADT and the DREAM Act
The House passed the DREAM Act and are awaiting a DADT bill passed by the Senate.

They have roughly three weeks, until December 31.

1. The New Congress is sworn in on January 5
Minus New Year's Day, which is not really a working day. That gives us a few more days, but your point is well taken about the urgency of time.

2. Well, DADT repeal is now in the hands of Lieberman, Collins, Udall.
I've read about this "Rule 14" that Lieberman is using to get the standalone bill on the floor and voted on before the Senate adjourns. I don't quite understand it, but Lieberman knows the arcane rules of the Senate.

If DADT repeal doesn't happen before the end of the year, it will have to be struck down through the courts. It needs to happen.

Of course, I also hope the DREAM act will pass this year as well.

3. I am VERY surprised the GOP isn't fighting harder for the repeal of DADT
IF it gets struck down in the courts.. it is a large step towards the courts being forced to legalize gay marriage.

I would think they would want to get that OUT of the courts as quickly as possible by making it moot.

4. Gates and Mullen have repeatedly warned about relying on the courts to strike it down.
That's why they are lobbying for DADT repeal to happen in the Senate. And you'd think the Republicans would respect the opinions of a REPUBLICAN Secretary of Defense and the non-partisan Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

But if the Republicans think we're going to slink away if DADT repeal doesn't happen in Congress, guess again.

5. They don't care if the Court do overturn...
Edited on Sun Dec-12-10 03:49 PM by Davis_X_Machina
...They've run against 'Liberal justices on the Supreme Court!' on guns and abortion for a generation, and made staffing it with correct-thinking jurists a priority in every Presidential campaign.

Having the courts overturn is a feature, not a bug. It gives them a target that doesn't even need the writing of new talking points.

And passing DADT means an Obama victory. Which cannot be allowed to happen.

8. Wow, ProSense, i really admire you. You're just about the last supporter of the president who still
post in this hateful, depressing, hysterical place. You are brave.
