"Obama Has 'Gotten the Message'"
Obama Has 'Gotten the Message': NBC-WSJ Poll
Published: Wednesday, 15 Dec 2010 | 6:53 PM ET

By: John Harwood

President Obama remains more politically resilient than mid-term election setbacks suggest— and his adjustment to those setbacks may be helping him.

That’s the conclusion of a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, which shows the Democratic incumbent leading prospective Republican challengers for 2012 and benefiting from the tax-cut compromise he has struck with Republican leaders. Roughly two-thirds of Americans said Obama has “gotten the message” from voters in November.

“It’s really important to not lose track of his retained strengths,” said Republican pollster Bill McInturff, who conducts the NBC/WSJ survey with his Democratic counterpart Peter Hart.

Though Americans rebuked his economic performance in the election, they fear the consequences of a “failed presidency” and “don’t want to throw him under the bus.”

Obama’s overall job approval remains tepid at 45 percent, around its level for much of the year. But 72 percent of Americans said they like him personally, whether or not they agree with his policies.

<snip>

Yet in the compromise he struck with Republican leaders on taxes—to extend all the Bush tax cuts for two years while temporarily cutting workers’ payroll taxes and extending unemployment benefits—Obama may have found a formula for bolstering support on the economy.

By 59 to 36 percent, Americans said they support the agreement—a margin that helps explain why a bipartisan majority of 81 senators approved the package. Despite loud resistance from some House Democrats, the package is expected to pass that chamber as well and go to the president for his signature.

Six in 10 poll respondents called the package “a fair compromise on both sides”, nearly double the proportion saying that either Obama or Republican leaders “gave up too much” in negotiations. And if it fails to win approval, just 15 percent of Americans said they would fault Obama, compared to 70 percent who said they would hold either Republicans or Democrats in Congress responsible.

US President Barack Obama walks out of the White House in Washington on December 15, 2010 to hold a working meeting at the Blair House with business leaders to discuss ways to continue to work together grow the economy, create jobs in the private sector, and invest in American innovation and competitiveness.

24. To have gotten no unemployment ins. extension or earned-income expansion ...
would have fucked over the poor much more. And there was nothing happening with that in Congress.

Assuming you believe the polls, that is.

6. Gosh, Americans are glad they didn't get a tax hike...Suprise,Surprise
sure people think this is a good "compromise" if they believe the only alternative is a tax hike on them. That's understandable.

But the fact that Obama and the centrists allowed things to get to that point is the real problem.

Why is it that Obama seems to fight hardest after the horse has left the barn, instead of early on when it matters?

8. Obama tried to get Congress to vote on taxes before the election. He gave several speeches on it.
Congress refused to act. Not sure how you can blame Obama for that.

28. Same thing
The metaphors may be mixed, but the fact is that something everyone has known was coming (for ten years, actually) was presented as a last minute emergency requirement with no time for better options.

Sorts reminiscent of the way the public option was killed and a half-assed health reform was shoved down the throats of Dems.

Whybis it Repugs never seem to allow themselves to be backed into such corners.

35. By design,
as long as they can define the terms of engagement, they own the show. Every time a Democrat lets the right define the issue, or caves to a right wing play, he or she validates the right's view of the world, and they proceed to shove it down all our throats. Some people are so afraid of the right, they will trample their own as they are herded into those corners.

16. I found myself saying SHut Up to him
Edited on Wed Dec-15-10 10:13 PM by tibbiit
When I heard him on the radio today saying how the tax cuts will be the greatest... blah blah blah.
It popped out of my mouth automatically as if he were Bush (who only told the truth once imo).
Im shocked I said it, but it was a bullshit story and I had already raised my eyebrow in bullshit warning this AM when I heard that really... Holbroke was just joking, he didnt really mean we need to get out of Afghanistan. Just reading this pisses me off. STOP

I expect obvious propaganda from Repubs. They lie as they breathe. I dont expect obvious bush style propaganda from my own side.
\
so
CUT THAT SHIT OUT. (even though I still like you) Stop!
In fact I just got my envelope from the National Dems asking for money. I dropped it unopened in the trash. I will continue doing that until this bullshit stops.
I will spread my money on a very few, not scatter it to bullshiting republicans in democrat clothes.
tib

edit
lol I said quite a few bullshits lol. but I am really upset at the way things have turned out! I really didnt expect to feel this way.

20. You Know....
....we need to keep in mind that we are sort of in a bubble here. The outside world does not typically think like the typical DUer.

Of course, this cuts both ways...
If the typical voter out there starts to look a lot like what we read here (i.e. criticism of Obama), then you know that it isn't "just us."

Does that make any sense.
