BREAKING: Reid pulls spending bill
By: CNN Wire Staff

(CNN)–Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday he was dropping efforts to pass an omnibus spending bill to keep funding the government for the rest of the fiscal year, and instead will work with Republicans on a short-term alternative.

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/12/16/breaking-reid-pulls-spending-bill/

Reid says he doesn't have the votes to shut down Repug filibuster so will go with short-term funding WITHOUT all the "earmarks," including those the Repugs had put in. Reid and Durbin are eviscerating the GOP on the Senate floor right now.

Good news is that this will probably create more space to work out DADT repeal and START.

1. OK, that sounds like a wise use of time. But then "budget" sounds
kind of important to me, so..hope he knows what he's doing, LOL.

The spiritual meaning of 'Earmarks' is a comment on slavery.

Exodus 21:2 “If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything. 3 If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him. 4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.

5 “But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,’ 6 then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.

There is a label trap in there, however that is some of the lingo used in some concepts on that topic.

Side note, those verses were within a time period where such things were done often in society, and as society improves, such things are not valid to be applied to an improving society.

McCaskill is blasting the "righteous indignation coming from the other side of the isle" -- particularly Johnny McCrypt who just toolishly claimed some sort of moral victory. High drama right here.

17. Something seems wrong about this..
Budget spending bills can't be filibustered last I checked, yet I am hearing some people saying we didn't get a budget done because of a Republican filibuster. This can't be correct.

Bush got both his tax cuts through on a 10 year basis by using regular budget spending bills. This is why they are 10 years rather than permanent, because they didn't have the votes to stop a Democratic filibuster.

So what I want to know is, why on earth didn't we pass the spending bills and budget before the November election. This is how it supposed to be done, why didn't we do it with our huge majorities?

Is it really just Republicans against this Omnibus spending bill? Sounds to me like a lot of Democrats were against it as well.

So we basically failed to pass the spending bills, failed to pass a budget, and effectively just gave the Republicans control over the 2011 budget instead of just 2012/2013. How insane is that? What the hell were we doing with our huge majorities?

20. A budget resolution cannot be filibustered
Edited on Thu Dec-16-10 09:34 PM by tritsofme
But a the spending bills that appropriate funds are always subject to filibuster, unless considered under the budget reconciliation process. The Bush tax cuts were both passed under reconciliation.

By failing to pass a budget resolution with reconciliation instructions, the process was not available to them this year.

19. He "will work with republicans.."? Harry Reid has totally lost it. In addition to the
spending bill, the republicans have won on The DREAM Act, killing it forever, and are in the process of killing The START Treaty by stalling it out so it won't pass with the new teabagger republicans in 2011. DADT Repeal is on thin ice with promises by people with no honor. And he says he will work with republicans?

21. dang it....
I was hoping the omnibus would pass - I knew it wasn't likely to happen... but did hope it would. I'm pretty sure this means agency funding for grants is on hold. The omnibus with its funding and even those "earmarks" that people like to use as punching bags would have a stimulus effect.

I do hope DADT and START get through and maybe even DREAM. But still... damn.....
