HOW ABOUT A MAJOR LEAGUE THANK YOU TO DEMOCRATS & OBAMA TODAY !!!
Edited on Sat Dec-18-10 12:06 PM by RBInMaine
DEMCRATS have been the ones who have overwhelmingly supported civil rights advancements including the historic vote today on DADT. DEMOCRATS and Obama have passed TONS, yes TONS, of legislation in the last two years that has been DAMN GOOD on balance and PROGRESSIVE (if you know English and remember the root of that term is PROGRESS). Again, DEMOCRATS made history today, and it was also DEMOCRATS who have fought so hard on the DREAM ACT (which, sadly, came up short).

To the naysayers out there who have been bashing Obama and Dems out of tunnel visioned and non realistic purity, what do you say now? Was repealing DADT "progressive" enough for you? How about fighting so hard for the DREAM Act? How about fighting so hard for the START Treaty? Progressive enough? I damn well hope you give credit where credit is god damn well due ! BARACK OBAMA will sign the DADT repeal. Could you imagine a RePUKE president signing it? THANK YOU DEMS AND OBAMA ! YOU CAME THROUGH FOR AMERICA AGAIN !

Edited on Sat Dec-18-10 12:20 PM by frazzled
is one of the main reasons this passed. Even Republicans (except John McCain, finding the one general who opposed it) could not go against the advice of the US Military. Obama deserves a lot of credit here. He promised it will end before the end of this year, and that is coming to pass.

18. True. President Obama worked to get Gates and Mullen on board to support the repeal and set up the
study to provide cover to moderate Dems and Repubs to vote yes.

If he let it become a fight between the White House and Dems vs. the Military, this wouldn't have happened. It made it take longer but it is what made it possible.

131. Vision, discipline, and patience…
and, as Michelle said, whip smart. If he'd pursued this going through the courts, or muscling it through with only Democrats supporting it, the backlash would have been vicious, and possibly set up the conditions for ugly threats and violence. Since Obama took the time to build the support and the evidence that the military could handle the change, hopefully backlash will be minuscule or non-existent.

Had he just went and said "we're going to repeal DADT, no questions" it would've went down in flames and not been looked at again for years.

This is one of his pearls. Let's not be black and white, like school children and psychopaths, of course he is not all bad. You can tell who pulls the strings, though. This, spoken from someone who voted and campaigned for him. I am happy to give him this one, way to go!!!

14. When money talks, Obama listens
What prompted the WH to get more hands-on to repealing DADT was an effective stunt done by some major G&L donors. Back in early 2009 some major G&L donors backed out of a major fundraiser for President Obama and V.P. Biden was suppose to headline this event. This situation attracted the press, which is why I know about it. It would have been embarrassing for Biden to speak in front of a nearly empty ballroom. Withdrawing money from Obama forced the WH to take more interest in DADT.

So the lesson we Progressives should take is to withhold our money and volunteer time to pressure Obama to treat us and our ideas with respect.

He said all along this would be done, and to have patience. There was a major economic blowout to attend to and a health-care bill to pass. Once done, this was front burner on the President's agenda. And it has been achieved.

Obama: Benefits for gay workers only one step
SNIP

Several powerful gay fundraisers withdrew their support from a Democratic National Committee event scheduled for June 25 where Vice President Joe Biden is expected to speak.

"Latinos matter for numbers; gays matter for money," Aravosis said.

The leaders' withdrawal from the fundraiser comes after a handful of public missteps that White House officials concede were not handled with the best eye on public relations.

The breaking point came last week, when the administration defended the Defense of Marriage Act, which allows states to reject another state's legalized gay marriages and blocks federal Washington from recognizing those state-based unions. Overturning it is a top legislative target for gay activists. But Justice Department lawyers used incest as a reason to support the law.

Critics saw the Justice memo as evidence of Obama saying one thing and doing another.

"I was profoundly disappointed by this action, particularly coming from this administration," said Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., the first openly gay non-incumbent to win election to Congress. "I still take President Obama at his word that he is committed to the repeal ... I also recognize that he cannot do it alone."

SNIP

in favor of a repeal. Including stating it in a State of the Union address.

Your refusal to give credit where credit is due only makes you look ignorant. Certainly does nothing to hurt this administration.

continues. For all our joy about DADT finally coming to an end (tomorrow), we should be equally sad that the DREAM act did not move forward. It's a bad sign for immigration reform altogether, and many innocent young people will not be able to achieve their educational, career, or military goals because of it.

I think the two biggest issues President Obama faced, going into his first term, were the tax issue and the war. Everything else they've accomplished so far needed to get done, and they deserve the credit, but the tax deal is hard for me to stomach.

159. Both those pictures make those veterans look terrible!
On the left, the photo makes the guy looks scared, almost like people who are getting their mug shot taken.
On the right, the dark shadow across his face, weird look in his eyes, the photo makes the guy look like a serial killer.
If you took a photo of Ghandi like that it would even make him look questionable.

The media sucked back then and it still sucks now! FEAR!!! FEAR!!! FEAR!!!

Now THIS is a good photo:

he'll then pull out the "stops" to have it done. IOW whatever he compromised on previously was actually what he wanted to get. So no need for further spin from now on!

Anyway - I congratulate and acknowledge the effort in getting this through the recalcitrant senate.

64. Obama didn't do a damn thing for DADT - the hard work of men and women
GLBT servicemen/women who had to suffer with this stupid law did the work. They are the ones who deserve the thank you - the ones that lost careers, were forced to suffer in silence or those that bravely came forward to sacrifice so much - they are the ones responsible.

Obama barely lifted a finger or made a phone call to push - he sat back and let others do it for him.

Give credit where it is due

of the thousands that suffered and still fought for this thing to end.

An alien reading the posts would discern who was responsible for todays victory in this order:

President Obama
President Obama (WWII) version
President Obama and his band of fighting Democrats
The Democrats in general
Really cool republicans

Oh and lastly, the gays with big mouths, and people driven out of service.

if he would've done it your way, the next signing order would have eliminated it. Obama made sure the people that mattered were on board so there wouldn't be any excuses from the right. To say he didn't do anything when everything he did were seen as stalling tactics just isn't dealing with reality. He told you what he was doing and why he was doing it. He kept his promise whether you like it or not.

It didn't happen as fast as I wanted it to, but it did happen. I refuse to take part in hand wringing about the past.

DADT will be spoke of as relic of a less enlightened time one day, and the repeal happened under a dem presidency and congress. No one can deny that.

78. You are right - esp that the repeal could only
happen under a Democratic Pres and Congress. In all honesty my frustration comes from what I perceive to be a failure to recognize who really made this happen and that it took years of sacrifice and work.

I have been so moved by watching servicemen and women speak out about the effect this has had on their lives - what a life of secrecy and fear of being outed has done to them, and those who have lost their careers for something that is no one's business. And how they would all re-up to serve our country - a gov't who has treated them like second class citizens.

To say the credit goes to Obama and Congress seems like a slap in the face.

103. Your comment shows nothing but ignorance and a bitterness that is nothing short
of ridiculous.

Presidents are credited with the passing/failing of policies, legislation all of the time. Truman is given ALL of the credit for desegregating the military. No one EVER says a damn thing about the black men and women and their white supporters who risked their lives to help desegregate the military.

Obama has said repeatedly that he is in favor of repealing DADT and including during a State of the Union address. Did he do it all by himself? Hell no. But he has been the one to "set the tone" for this repeal. The gay servicemen and women played a massive role in this and are to be congratulated as well. But your refusal to acknowledge the president's role and even attempt to portray him as being AGAINST repeal ("he sat back and let others do it for him") shows an astounding amount of ignorance of how legislation is passed but more importantly, just sounds as though you've been sipping way too much HATER-ADE to be in any way objective about this president.

I never mentioned desgregation of the military - would you like me to?

Never said he was against the repeal - but he was not nearly the 'fierce advocate' he claimed to be.

Too much HATER-ade? what the hell is that?

Ahh so much righteous anger over a perceived slight over the one who can do no wrong.

I have praised first candidate then President Obama for many things. However, I have never been impressed with his stance on civil rights for the GLBT community - and I say this as a straight married Latina who knows a thing or two about the Constitution.

Believe it or not, IT IS possible to disagree with and still SUPPORT our President. Every President has done some good and some bad - no one is flawless nor completely flawed.

President Obama has done a lot of things right - but the majority of work and sacrifice made for the repeal of DADT was NOT done by him.

Sorry I don't fall into your neat black and white world - try someone else.

Obama will get the credit for DADT's repeal ALONG with members of Congress and the servicemen and women who have fought for this repeal to happen.

To pretend that he does not deserve any of the credit for this, as I said, shows astounding ignorance of the political/legislative process in this country and also displays a whole lot of unwarranted bitterness that has nothing to do with his role in this process.

than the corporatist power element that controls Washington. The stuff they are lined up against to not give ANY ground on is anything that affects the money and power of those at the top (like the tax rates, the estate tax, HCR, social security, etc., anything to do with immigration and free trade, etc.). They probably really don't care much how DADT really goes, except how it might serve them with other agenda.

This was something the elites figured they could "hand" us, and not screw themselves in their strategy next year to BREAK this government's bank, and then tear down all of the programs that benefit us instead of the elites at the top. And by doing this, they probably hope to tone down the blowback that ultimately will come when they go after their real agenda later.

About the only risk they have is with those religious types in their party which are dead set against gay rights. One could argue that this might even help them if they have plans for expanding war-making in the future, and want to at some point institute a draft. Without DADT, there's one less barrier people can use to avoid the draft.

I'm very glad for my gay friends, etc. that they no longer have to live a lie to serve their country, but we still have a long way to go before we can overcome the sellout of our party on things that really will matter in the coming years if we are to retain any form of democracy, middle class, etc.

Why did the Obama administration feel the need to appeal the court ban on DADT? Just so they could prove that while we may CHOOSE not to discriminate against homosexuals, you'd better not question the constitutionality of discriminating against homosexuals?

In other words, we as a society choose to let homosexuals fight in our wars, but we legitimize and reserve the right to discriminate against them in any other area?

135. My own deduction?
It was incredibly important that the repeal of DADT come about because popular support had developed to the point that Congress would do it by law. Had the courts struck it down, I think there would have been a lot of ugly backlash against judges (who are already receiving death threats in some cases) and against gays and lesbians.

That doesn't count. In case you missed it, the Dream Act was blocked by the Senate and may not be revived for a long time. There are several formalities before our gay service members are safe to come out and openly serve. It has to be fully and formally implemented by the Pentagon - Joint Chiefs and Defense Secretary. 118. I am deeply happy for our GLBT sisters and brothers, and no less disgusted with Obama
One act does not a "progressive" administration make. If I recall correctly, Nixon floated the idea of a guaranteed national income. Does that make him a progressive? I can't see that this cost Obama a damn thing - unlike say, fighting to restore some level of progressivism to the tax structure, or creating a jobs program, or putting a leash on the madness of our military in their despicable drone attacks, or gutting the "for-profit contractor" system blowing up the cost of our already illegitimate wars and occupations abroad, or going after war criminals, or standing up to the vampire Pharma and Health "Insurance" Corps, or breaking up the big banks, or or or.

And the fact that what should be a given - that he would actually try to accomplish something progressive, just, sane - should be an occasion for such wild jubilation is telling; deep satisfaction that people will be relieved of an awful burden is one thing; dancing in the streets because Obama actually supported it is quite another.

So good for him in this one thing.

130. I am glad for this victory
I will give credit where credit is due - thank you to all GLBT service members who helped accomplish this. Thank you to those who have struggled in good faith against overwhelming odds and despicable oppression. Thank you to those who have helped our ignorant populace see the light in this particular issue, thank you for your service. I am very sorry to all of you that this happened in the first place in what is supposed to be the land of the free and home of the brave. Keep up the good fight, I will help as I can. I am very sorry that you must still face bigotry and hatred from so many of the ignorant.

That, is giving credit where it is most due. Thanks to Obama and to the politicians who supported this.

That being said, it is my opinion that this post shows far more snark and anger towards your fellow democrats than it does gratitude or understanding for what has been accomplished. Your anger is misplaced and your gratitude should come first to those who have struggled so hard and sacrificed so much.

I give credit to all who helped accomplish this, but this act alone is not enough to redeem those who have betrayed their ideals and their supporters so deeply - those we refer to as politicians (whichever side they may claim). This act alone does not negate the endless ambition, greed and corruption so rampant within our government. I am, however, grateful, that they finally chose to face this issue and to follow through with at least one promise.

In closing, this OP does not strike me as well intended. You can give thanks without also insulting and belittling so many people. I am sorry you felt the need to use this as an attack against those who's views you oppose.

133. Grandma always told me...
... to never expect a "thank you" for doing the right thing. A plank in the Democratic platform was nailed down. Woo-Hoo! I still ain't impressed although the House has done a much better job than the Senate or the WH. So, OK. Thanks, I guess.

141. It was pretty damned cool.
I like being a Democrat on days like this.
But, I probably still won't rate an invitation to a White House dinner.

Like a Red Buttons joke - "Major Hogwash, who worked so hard to repeal DADT by posting on forums on the internet . . . never got a dinner."

167. McCain's lasting legacy
will not be the "maverick", not the "independent", and not the reasonable moderate voice of the GOP. John McCain will go down in history as the Strom Thurmond of the 21st century, deliberately standing in the way of equal rights for all citizens.

161. so now gays get to serve openly in the u.s. imperialist war machine.....
.....whoopee.

this matters in terms of "equality" but only in the most technical sense. joining the u.s. military at this time is one of the least progressive things a person could do. now gays can do it openly.

now, the defeat of the defense of marriage act would be something to cheer about.

and nothing can undo obama's bullshit pro-corporatist moves so far.

170. I'm ecstatic DADT was finally repealed and I rec'ed a number of threads about
it with kudos to all involved. This thread doesn't get my rec because of the snarkiness. Too bad -- it's a great thing that was done and deserves to be hugely celebrated, not accompanied by yet more divisiveness.
