Scholars agree-111th congress possibly the most productive in history-rivals New Deal
Edited on Sat Dec-18-10 03:08 PM by Politics_Guy25
1. $800 billion economic stimulus.
2. Sweeping Health Care Reform.
3. Lily Ledbetter Act.
4. Sweeping financial reform.
5. Historic DADT repeal.
6. Likely passage of history nuclear arms reduction treaty
7. 2 supreme court nominees confirmed.
8. Economic stimulus/tax cut package
9. Student loan reform.
10. Tobacco regulation reform

Go Obama!
Go Pelosi!
Go Reid!

DADT repeal and HCR are the crowning achievements in my view.

This is one of the most productive Congresses in history."

Norman Ornstein, Congressional Scholar at American Enterprise Institute, Financial Times 3/19/10

"… Congress and the White House have completed 16 months of activity that rival any other since the New Deal in scope or ambition… If there is a theme to all this, it has been to try to lift economic growth while also reducing income inequality."

David Leonhardt, New York Times 5/22/2010

The New Direction Congress is focused on fighting for the Middle Class—creating jobs, closing tax loopholes that send jobs overseas and helping small businesses—while Congressional Republicans continue to side with the special interests. Creating jobs while responsibly reducing the deficit, the 111th Congress is building a new prosperity for America.

Maybe that Time Magazine cover in December 2008 with Barack Obama as FDR wasn't that far off after all?

3. I agree
But I am also just in awe of the Obama/Pelosi/Reid Trio. Probably the high of the DADT repeal happening right now in effect.

2. K&R. I can't believe how much they accomplished despite the 60-vote threshhold
needed for EVERYTHING.

5. Quantity is good, but quality also matters. So while it may have been as busy as the
New Deal era, it remains to be seen if it will measure up to the same level quality-wise.

6. Quality wise?
The best. Pelosi has done an outstanding job... the first women speaker and she is right up there with the best.

Now... Obama and Reid have yet to learn the lesson from Pelosi. They ain't in the same class.

11. How come they always seem to overlook President Carter? He had a far better ...........
percentage of his campaign promises kept than any other modern president except LBJ.

12. It's insane how much they got done, considering how obstructionist the Republicans have been.
Major credit to Obama, Pelosi, and (sigh) Reid.

13. There is no doubt about that.
No one has ever faced such a disciplined opposition as they have and they made it work.

A belated Welcome to DU :hi: to you
