John McCain's Inglorious DADT Moment

In the end, eight Republican senators cast their votes to allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the U.S. armed forces, repealing the 17-year-old "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

But Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) did not join them and used his time on the Senate floor Saturday to stand athwart history yelling stop.

"Today is a very sad day," McCain announced, detailing his continuing opposition to allowing gay and lesbian soldiers to be open about their sexuality.

"There will be high-fives over all the liberal bastions of America," he predicted, from "the elite schools that bar military recruiters from campus" to "the salons of Georgetown" and the "talk shows" where people -- "most of whom have never have served in the military" -- will crow over the law's repeal.

<...>

McCain's vigorous opposition to the DADT repeal is not the first time he's found himself swimming against the tide of history. As a congressman in 1983, he voted against the creation of a federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. -- a vote he later regretted.

1. Bitter old man. I can only imagine what crazy Palin will say.
It turns out those two were pretty well suited for each other after all.

meme about him. Even so: it's been striking to me how fast his descent into smallness and meanness and bitterness has accelerated over the last two years.Inglorious is the word, alright.

But I am so glad that McCain and his ilk are in the MINORITY on this issue!
A sweet victory today.

That he lost the election, and he just can't get over it! He didn't have a chance in hell of winning, even before he picked that lame brain from the frozen north to be his running mate, but she did take him down even further! Now all he can do is be a pain in the ass, and do his best to screw things up in congress! His family needs to find him a nursing home, lock him up and throw away the key!

19. Drop dead, McCain. Seriously, do the world a favor and stop eating up oxygen that human beings
with a soul and/or a conscience could be breathing.

I wish we could amend the START treaty to make mutually assured destruction of Mc5planes part of the deal. The sooner that a-hole dies, the better.

31. McCain is truly an ugly man who has displayed the worst of his character.
Edited on Sun Dec-19-10 11:16 PM by political_Dem
I shudder to think what might have become of this country if he became POTUS. What is worse, he might have treated this country the same way he treated the fighter planes he crashed.

If anything, his bigotry and truly detestable actions against anyone who is on the margins is a matter of public record. His descendants along with the rest of the country will know what a dishonorable man he was not only in the military, but also in the halls of Congress--especially when it came to matters of civil rights.

He should be ashamed of himself.
