3. I hope you are ready to enlist to replace them!

It's easy to sit on the sidelines - enlist and change the military from inside!

12. I am too old, and why do you want homophobes to stay in the military?

14. If they reinstate at least 3/4 of the 14,000 that have been
kicked out of the military because of this insane policy they will get their numbers back up. Many of those kicked out said they would go back in.

4. Heh... we're not hearing the line that "The president has no control over Congress" of late.
It's like religious people: when there's a good outcome, they praise God; when there's a bad outcome, they hold God blameless.

6. Yuppers. That's how they roll. They were screaming he was weak, he got it done.
Thanx Obama. Like just yesterday they weren't screaming he was weak. But no worries. There are die hards who see him as a failure.

7. For my own part, I agree.
I always assign the president a goodly share of responsibility in legislative outcomes. And I like to take a crack at those who assign credit but never blame, or vice versa.

8. I'm glad to see that the world is completely black and white.

After all, it's not like the President can't control when bills are brought up or not, and can't control how the opposition votes, but CAN do things like keep issues on the agenda, initiate studies that give cover to Republican Senators, and encourage people to pressure Congress. And it's not like this would certainly have NEVER gotten done without a Democratic President no matter what our majorities.

Oh wait, it IS like that. :eyes:

17. Just be sure you don't argue the "helpless president" position the next time there's a bad outcome.

9. Not true.
The President did not have control of Congress. Congress agreed. So now he can sign it. They both did it. As the Constitution calls for.

But people who blamed the President because Congress had not done it need to be honest and give him all the credit. He got all the blame, he gets all the credit.

15. The proper position for you is clear, too.
Namely, that since the president has no influence over Congress and what it does, he is due credit or blame only to the extent that he signs or vetos whatever Congress serves up.

10. Obama has influence but he cannot order Congress to do as he wishes on demand. It's a long game.
Edited on Sun Dec-19-10 11:47 AM by ClarkUSA
Even President Obama's influence is not enough to get what he wants every time. No president gets what he wants all the time, even when his party controls Congress but much less so when the GOP is bent on obstructionism at almost every legislative turn.

Those who accused President Obama, his supporters, and the Democratic Congress of all manner of nasty things were wrong in not seeing that achieving legislative goals takes time, strategy and timing.

Nate Silver has a logical reason for those 11 GOP votes:

Rachel Maddow and Andrew Sullivan give credit where credit is ultimately due: President Obama. Read what they said: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=433&topic_id=570318&mesg_id=571564

16. "Obama has influence."
Just be consistent, with that, OK? And don't peddle the notion of of a powerless presidency whenever there's a bad legislative outcome. No problem with Maddow. She's consistent about assigning a share of responsibility to the president for legislative outcomes, good and bad.

11. If someone's homophobia is stronger than his desire to serve his country,
then we definitely don't need his bigoted ass in our Armed Forces.

What a great day for our gay fellow citizens. And for our military. :patriot:

13. The homophobes in today's military are the racist in the 1950's
and 1960's military. Many said they would quit if desegregation was implemented....guess what they didn't quit and they did their jobs.

18. There's no need to call those with a differing opinion insulting names.
Reasonable people can have a difference of opinion on the gays in military issue, or in abortion issues, etc. As long as they're not tea party loonies, there's no need to call them names, unless they called you names.

When I was listening to the hearings before Congress, I didn't hear anyone call the gays in the military names.
