Presidential Elections : It's not The Supreme Court, stupid,
Edited on Tue Dec-21-10 01:35 PM by denem
at least not always.

On of the eve of ratifying the START treaty, we should forget

President Nixon's decision to liberate Cuba during the missile crisis
President Gore's capture of a US Al Qaeda cell in July 2001
President McCain's decision to win the Korean War
Prime Minister Putin's decision to test the Polish Missile Shield

and those things we don't remember
because the vote went the other way,

And then sometimes, it is the Supreme Court,
because the votes didn't matter either.

1. With Bush* v. Gore, the Supreme Joke irreparably damaged America.
We can never escape this history, this misery.

3. Yeah, that's pretty insane and lacking in history.
If that were to happen (or attempted, I should say), what's left of half of the east coast would still be radioactive.

5. All I can say is the Joint Chiefs must have been fucking idiots.
My apologies for saying it didn't have a basis in history -- My collegiate studies on the topic had concluded that there were more than enough Russian nuclear weapons trained on us such that it didn't really matter what Cuba did or did not have. They had nuclear equipped submarines right off the coast of Cuba! An attack on them would have set off a devastating chain reaction. That the Joint Chiefs considered an invasion of Cuba in ignorance of that fact is beyond astounding.

6. Peace.

In all fairness, the hawk in the flock was Robert McNamara, who went on to stage the greatest military debacle in US history. "Vision" and "Consequences" were not in his dictionary. My tongue in cheek comment about liberating Cuba was that JFK avoided nuclear war, the same point I was making about GWB's missile shield. Russia threatened it would retarget Europe with it's nuclear arsenal.

7. It's always about the Supreme Court, but other things are important too!
