Job Offers Rising as Economy Warms Up
Job Offers Rising as Economy Warms Up

By JAMES R. HAGERTY And JOE LIGHT

As the economy gradually recovers, some big U.S. companies are cranking up their recruiting and advertising thousands of job openings, ranging from retail clerks and nurses to bank tellers and experts in cloud computing.

Many of the new jobs are in retailing, accounting, consulting, health care, telecommunications and defense-related industries, according to data collected for The Wall Street Journal by Indeed Inc., which runs one the largest employment websites. It said the number of U.S. job postings on the Internet rose to 4.7 million on Dec. 1, up from 2.7 million a year earlier. The company daily collects listings from corporate and job-posting websites, removing duplicates.

Its figures may undercount available jobs because some companies don't post all listings online, an Indeed spokesman said. Farming, manufacturing and construction jobs tend to be under-represented in online postings, while skilled computer and mathematical jobs are overrepresented, said June Shelp, an economist and vice president for the Conference Board, a private research group.

8. For all the jobseekers...
I know it's hard - been there. Was in the right place at the right time. Signed up with 6 temp agencies and didn't have any bites for 5 months. In the meantime, I was lucky enough to get interviews, even 2nd interviews, but with no luck. Then, out of the blue - on Friday the 13th, of all days - I got a call for a temp job paying only $13.50 an hour. At first I was hesitant - that's not enough to live on - but they kept calling me back throughout the day asking for more details regarding my resume. Then at 4:30, they called and said, if you want it, show up Monday at 8:00. I hadn't even been interviewed - the irony, LOL. It offered a low salary, but with excellent benefits. I had no choice, it was the best chance I was going to get. My foot was in the door. Six months later, I was hired full-time.

Don't give up. DON'T give up. Hang in there, keep plugging away. Hoping and praying for anyone unemployed to get that one break and get that foot in the door.

12. I'm going back to work after 6 months unemployed
Monday morning, it's back to work for me.

I was laid off on July 1. Granted, I never really liked that job, it was one that I took when we moved to a smaller city after working 13 years for a publisher in another city in the same state. I never fit in, and when I got laid off, I was sort of glad.

As I told friends, I liked the no-working part but not the no-income part.

After probably about 8 interviews, I ran into a friend who told me about a job opening. It wasn't advertised yet and they really wanted someone with experience in the field. That was two months ago, I got the job and now it's back to work. I'm excited about working in a productive and creative environment.

Unemployment insurance was a lifeline for us. Even though my husband was working, having such a big chunk out of our budget was tough. We very lucky enough to get some help from his parents, and I am truly grateful.

I think the job market will pick up after the first of the year. Not too many people hire in December, but I have seen an increase in the amount of call backs I got, and even an unsolicited call or two.

Good luck to all of you job seekers.
