Mississippi to free 2 jailed for life for $11 robbery

OCEAN SPRINGS, Mississippi | Thu Dec 30, 2010 8:22am EST

(Reuters) - Mississippi's governor has agreed to free two sisters who served 16 years of a double life sentence for an armed robbery in which nobody was hurt and $11 was stolen.

More at --> http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6BT1WB20101230

So, there has been much debate over Obama's call lauding the reemployment of a millionaire sports star.

Here we have two women who are being released after serving SIXTEEN YEARS of a LIFE SENTENCE for $11 and no permanent injury.

Yet, they are not being released due to some injustice of our system. They are being released because one needs to give the other a kidney and the prison department doesn't want to pay for the daily dialysis anymore.

Will Mr. Obama be making some calls on their behalf?

I sincerely doubt it.

49. Exactly.
You know, I thought being a liberal meant that you had to understand context and nuance. I thought being a liberal was about not "going with the gut" and making sure you had the full story. Guess not--we've got almost as many insufferable, angry-for-no-fucking-reason reactionaries as they do.

6. Wow, Michael Vick

is exposing signs of desperation. Three days, really? Fuck Vick. This is a non-story looking for faux outrage. There was outrage when the President didn't pardon people fast enough. Then there was outrage because of who he pardoned. There is always outrage. And no, the President doesn't have to call employers on behalf of every convict.

He also signed the Fair Sentencing Act. Too bad that didn't get three days of coverage.

13. Sure, when...
The TSA is eliminated...
When the FBI stops raiding the houses of peace activists...
The Justice department figures out what "Antitrust" means...
When Guantanamo is closed...
When the Democrats learn to stand up to the Republicans...
When the Obama administration stops making insulting remarks about liberals and progressives...

then I'll give you your break.

That's a lame crutch.

Who the hell said he's powerless?

The fact is that he's not the entire government, and you'll see that fully demonstrated beginning next week.

The President has control over a lot of things and he's still not able to address them all at once. Still, there are often obstacles, as we're seeing with health care reform.

But, I suppose they've been there almost ten years, what's another two?

It's not like there is an international criminal court that we could have relied on. Oh, wait, there is.
It's not like they could have been brought onto American soil where their legal status would be less nebulous. Oh, wait, they could have.
It's not like Obama could have put a stake through the heart of the non-existent legal status of "enemy combatant". Oh, wait, he could have.

This was supposed to be a top priority. It hasn't been.

And I never mentioned health care.

21. (honestly?)
honestly, so am I. But every day I get some thing he's either done or allowed to happen that I just can't take anymore. But he can't shift to the left if we keep accepting his shift to the right and simultaneously attacking the left-garde. Recently, there was a link running around to the 1955 republican party platform. It was further left than the de-facto democratic party platform of 2010.

Liberal has been a dirty word since Dukakis. All I see inside the democratic part is "strategy" and "electability", issues be damned.

So, if I have to come here and upset some people, so be it. Playing nice, has not worked.

31. There are a companies that hire ex-cons. If hiring ex-cons was
important to Obama, it would have been nice he had taken the trouble to call up such a company and laud their extending a hand to people who face an uphill battle. No name ex-cons need their plight highlighted and companies who hire no name ex-cons need to be praised - a millionaire ex-con with no moral conscience and his multimillion dollar sports team don't need squat from the President.

The Eagles re-hired him long before the call took place.

How are you equating this instance with a failure of the justice system? The justice aspect of the Vick case is long over and done with.

Willful ignorance in play to keep arguing off-point.

28. The President seems to follow the news
that's why he knows about Vick, and likely knows about these two.

They are a completely different story, however. Mainly, how the hell can a judge make a ruling like that? And why did they get life for a robbery? Something rotten in the state of Mississippi.

46. I wonder about any legal authority, period, let alone to be misused
Judges get too much power in many states. But I agree, if they were a bit lighter in skin color, this judge may well have never made such a ruling or whatever entity gave such a penalty.

32. Just to be clear, Obama didn't call Jeffrey Lurie to talk about Vick-he called to talk green energy
The Eagles have a progressive stadium and that's why Obama actually had the conversation with Lurie. The Vick part was more sensational to discuss so that's what all the naysayer's are focusing on instead of how the President is learning how to use effective alternative energy sources. Shame on him! </sarcasm>

And who is footing the bill for this "greening" of the stadium? I'm betting taxpayers.

Pro sports stadiums are a prime example of welfare for the rich. We the people pay for it with our tax dollars that should rightly go to schools and don't even get free tickets.
What a gyp.
