100. I don't think they do
I think they tell it as a joke. The joke works rather better with Clinton than with Obama though, since Hillary was percieved as "the power behind the throne" far more than Michelle is.

Here's a version with George HW and Barbara:

Dear Church Family,

A friend of mine shared with me about bringing out the best in others and I want to share it with you. When we are with someone we have a choice; we can build them up or wear them down. It is how we interact with them. Read these words and decide how you will choose.

There’s a great story that has been told about President George and Barbara Bush. They were on the campaign trail and stopped to get gas. The attendant happened to be an old high school sweetheart of Barbara’s. George later remarked, “Just think, if you had married him, you’d be the wife of a gas station attendant.” Barbara replied, “George, you’re confused. If I had married him, he’d be President of the United States.”

Some people have the ability to bring out the best in others. Maybe Barbara Bush is one of these people, I don’t know. But I do know that this is something all leaders, all parents and grandparents, all husbands, all wives must strive to do: Help others become what they can be. It is not always easy helping others develop their potential. Paul compared it to childbirth. He said to the Galatians: “Oh my dear children! I feel as though I am going through labor pains for you again, and they will continue until Christ is fully developed in your lives.” (Galatians 4:19)

...etc

53. I don't think the Obama's or the administration had anything to do with it,
some fan just made a nice little bit of humor. It's no different than when someone here photoshops a photo of Obama in a Superman outfit.
Everyone knows he doesn't really have on that outfit. I knew the OP was just a piece of fan lit.
Others may not have because it rings true and they hadn't heard the joke before.

101. As snopes points out, it pushes an even more pernicious stereotype
The one that a woman's place is to make her husband great rather than achieving greatness herself.

55. I remember this when it went around as Bill & Hillary.
It both demeans the President and makes the first-lady look bitchy.

Charming . . .

81. Yep, but in that version instead of a restaurant the guy owned a gas station.
It's an old story.

120. Do they ever. The other day I had a conservative friend of mine
inform me that Snopes was owned by George Soros. Well, you know, people, democrats should not have any rich people. All rich people should be conservative, so this friend is always down on Soros. I have read some stuff, but am by no means an expert on him, but I quickly informed her about who did run Snopes, two names I have now forgotten, but it is well known. I see so much crap written that conservatives take for gospel that I really wonder if all of them, including my loved friends, are just stupid?

67. If the roles were reversed, women would be screaming "sexism".
Her comment is sexist but it is also a testimony to how the victim complex works as well.

People finding her statement cute are only able to do so if you start with the sexist assumption that women are weaker and then work from there.

84. That's actually a recycled Clinton joke. But...I did hear that Michelle was warned away from Barack
He has a strange name. His father was Kenyan. His folks don't account for much.

If you marry him your ambitions are over.

HaH!!

That joke is so old, only the location and characters change. It was used with the senior Bushes, the Clintons and now the Obamas.
