My prediction on all the noise about Rick Perry
Edited on Fri Aug-12-11 12:51 PM by bigdarryl
He will be a big disappointment just like Fred Thompson in 2008 he was going to be the savor in 2008. Perry Looks good (to them anyway)on a resume but another empty suit.Remember this is a guy who hasn't had much national exposure his exposure has been all Texas watching him speak puts you to sleep

1. My prediction is that he will win the presidency
Because my fellow citizens are idiots and really like big talking, swaggering, preachy, aw-shucks, anti-government, low-tax-talking, Texas frauds.

Oh, that and because the GOP will steal a few states again.

7. That was the same argument folks made for Thompson
"Everyone but me is so stupid that he's going to stroll effortlessly into the Oval because the sheeple know him from TV and that is all it takes with Diebold"
Stroll effortlessly was an actual term used to me.

12. I don't think everyone is stupid
You aren't. The people on this board aren't for the most part.

I worry about my neighbor and the millions like him. He doesn't follow the news and just knows that his job is at risk and that damn Obama must be to blame. He will vote for the other guy if the other guy makes him feel good.

To me, that is stupid.

17. yea
And nobody thought BUSH was gonna be elected or re-elected right? Sorry to say but I have said the same thing for over a month now, I really think he will win this election. Because Obama is losing some of his base (as you can see here on DU), and Americans in general are dumb, and Perry gots the swagger to pull the independents. Obama will have to do something to pull some of the base back, and get ALL OF US out to vote again.

10. It depends on the fraction of undecided who are probably not total idiots but
who are easily swayed by simplistic arguments and often believe what they want to believe. We need to keep putting the truth out there no matter how steep the hill seems to be. It is the dimly conscious who decide elections - if they vote we win - if they don't we lose.

14. And the fraction of Dems who decide to stay home
We have people on this board even who threaten to stay home or vote third party. That will kill us if 2% of our voters decide to stay home.

Then, we also have the mobilization of the GOP. If they are mobilized (which they will be) then they can get every idiot GOP voter to the polls. That will kill us.

23. Yeah I agree - we have to have people going to the polls. That's essential /nt
It will be hard though - activists are not that motivated by the top of the ticket but that may change a little in the next 12 months.

16. No one who runs against SS and Medicare can win the Presidency in 2012
Check it out. Perry thinks SS and Medicare are unconstitutional. Never mind that SS has been around since 1935 and Medicare since 1965 and both have passed Constitutional muster. Governor Good Hair (Thanks Molly Ivins) knows better.

Edited on Fri Aug-12-11 02:15 PM by jimlup
Which Obama may not. He may manage to use it to put argue for his own austerity measures which will leave some of the borderline voters very confused.

Unlike us - most of the borderline voters do not have an abject hatred for the Republican party. Regardless of how irrational this appears to us - we need to keep it mind as we plan strategy for 2012.

3. I don't agree - he is going Major Threat running on his jobs record
and although he destroyed work safety regulations, lowered the middle class standard for Texans, and gutted state environmental laws - he has created many low paying jobs

21. BINGO!
He is a loon, he is a moron, he is a half wit cocky clown.

But, the "liberal media" will:

1) Carry whatever positive frame the republicans come up with for Perry. Which WILL be, tough leader with job creating experience as the governor of the biggest state in a perilous time in our country's history we need his TOUGH leadership.

2) Carry whatever negative frame the republicans will come up with for BO. Which will be "weak leader" who has not experience creating jobs and has lost jobs as president. And, of which half of dimwitted childish clowns on this friggen message board have been so kind as to join in helping to advance.

We have seen this show before. Bush a guy you would like to have a beer with and Gore an arrogant jerk. Bush a tough man who kept us safe, Kerry a weak flipper flopper who was not tough. Never mind bush was a moron and Gore brilliant, the battle lines were drawn by republicans about likeablity, and the "liberal press" carried those memes. Never mind that Bush allowed the greatest terrorist attack on our soil in our history (and froze up for 15 minutes reading a book to friggen elementary students) and bagged out on serving abroad, while Kerry was injured and awarded medals for his service in Vietnam, Bush was tough and resolute and would keep us safe.

Perry will get dinged for the secessionist stuff, but that only will make him more appealing in the primary, and once he clears the primary, the Rs will define the terms for the actual presidnetial.

It is a two horse race beween Mittens and Perry, and my money is on Perry.

9. Yeah---Let's Ignore Another Stupid, Hyper-Religious, Cowboy Governor From Texas.

I mean, what's to worry about, right? American voters are smart and sophisticated enough to always avoid somebody like that, right? We've got a wildly-popular, steely-eyed, decisive, take-no-prisoners Democratic president who has the Repubs running away in terror, and he's bound to win in 2012, right? We can just laugh at this guy Perry and he'll go away, right? And above all, history never, ever repeats itself---you don't see us getting into pointless, un-winnable wars anymore, because of the valuable lessons we learned in Viet Nam, right?

Right?

22. This is a different country today. The war criminal GWB was like a bitter pill.
When the entire country, not just theocratic fascist lemmings, vote the evangelical, anti gay anti poor crowd will not endure.
That's only if people stay away and do not get involve. GWB was not elected. He was initially installed by the US Supreme Cowards.

27. I Wish I Shared Your Optimism.

I see no basis for it, unfortunately. I think this country is more right-wing and fascist-oriented than ever. The fact that someone like Rick Perry can even mount a serious effort toward the presidency confirms my worst fears. The theocratic fascist lemmings have more power than I would have ever dreamed possible---and I don't perceive the Democratic Party as doing anything about it. I'd love to be proven wrong about this......

11. That limited exposure is a good explanation why he thought that
a prayer session with a bunch of fruitcakes would be a good idea. It might sell in Texas but it is not going to sell in the USA. He is too isolated to make much of an impact.

24. I think he will have a short shelf life. Like Newt and Trump.
He doesn't have the staying power and the mainstream republicans will not go for him. They are happy to have him bring the teabaggers to the primary, but he won't get the support to become the nominee.
