the truth of the matter is that opposition to higher taxes is (usually) one of the most solidly safe winner political positions ever.
right up there with coming out in favor of mom and apple pie.
what republicans (and the tea party in particular) are doing is using that as their headline issue to disguise a much larger agenda, one that isn't nearly as popular as low taxes. they want to throw grandma out on the street, they want to cut aid for education, for the poor, for the needy, they want to cut regulations that keep us healthy and safe, virtually everything GOOD that the government ever does. they'll expand the military, and they'll cut everything else. but they do it all while trumpeting low taxes, because that's the winning frame.
it's really a fraud anyway, because the only taxes they want to cut are the ones for the rich and corporations. they'll keep payroll taxes where they are, they might add a value added or national sales tax in order to get rid of the income tax. so the poor and lower middle class will pay more, but they don't contribute enough to politicians, particularly not republicans, so screw them, right?
