Gingrich on al-Awlaki: he got due process
http://caucuses.desmoinesregister.com/2011/09/30/gingrich-obama-was-right-to-order-the-killing-of-al-qaeda-operative/

Fort Dodge, Ia. — Newt Gingrich – a 2012 Republican presidential candidate who is one of the most critical of President Obama – today defended orders that led to the death of Al-Qaeda operative Anwar al-Awlaki.

He called American citizens who engage in war against the United States traitors and said that the military strike that killed al-Awlaki is constitutionally justified.

“American citizens who engage in war against the United States are legitimate targets and I think it was an appropriate and correct thing to execute him,” Gingrich said.

He continued, answering a question about the right of due process, a term used to describe a legal principle that government must respect the legal rights of citizens.

“They got due process,” Gingrich said. “The president signed an order to kill them. That was due process.”

3. So sad
*sigh* I can't believe what has become acceptable in the Democratic party. All the mainstream points of the Democratic party is now considered to the fringe left.

7. I do not get the outrage.
Then man was complicit in inciting attacks upon the United States that resulted in grave damage to our citizens. He did it multiple times. He fled justice and continued to aid the enemy, at that point he became a legal military target. This is not some guy that got frog marched out of his home for having fiery speeches and railing against the government. This guy incited violence against and tried to recruit people who would act aggressively against the U.S. and its citizens. The law is clear on these types of things. Aiding the enemy can result in death by our military.

And still others here agree with Rush Limbaugh that President Obama is weak.

Some even agree with Eric Cantor that HCR should be repealed because of its mandate.

2. Don't agree with the way Newt puts it
He puts it in a right wing way that leaves out the process by which the government decides who goes onto the list.

14. Oh there are plenty of them
Try looking you will see plenty of posts where Democrats here have said what he said.

"“American citizens who engage in war against the United States are legitimate targets and I think it was an appropriate and correct thing to execute him,”

I have seen several post saying the same thing, in one way or another.

You're making a false statement, calling me a liar and I'm not playing your fucking word game. Try reading.

24. Such melodramatic nonsense. Pres. Obama ordered this singular act via the AUMF.
Edited on Sat Oct-01-11 11:12 AM by ClarkUSA
Al-Awlaki was indicted by both Yemen and Great Britain last year. The UK man who he sent emails to has gone to jail for 30 years.

President Obama has the authority via the AUMF to use all "necessary and appropriate force" against those whom he determines "planned, authorised, committed or aided" the 9/11 attacks, or who harboured said persons or groups. The AUMF doesn't delineate any territorial specificity or geographical limits, either.

Edited on Sat Oct-01-11 11:39 AM by ClarkUSA
In WWII, under dear ol' FDR, a murderous traitor like Al-Awlaki would have been summarily shot in the back of the head without a trial.

28. No
You are completely wrong as you usually are. In civics college courses, AUMF is very controversial subject matter, and undermines everything we stand for as Americans. Not an exaggeration either.
