CBS POLL: Cain 17 (+12), Romney 17 (+1), Perry 12 (-11), Newt 8 (+1)
Herman Cain rises, Rick Perry slides in new CBS News poll
By Brian Montopoli Topics Polling ,Campaign 2012 .71 Comments

CBS News Poll analysis by the CBS News Polling Unit: Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus and Anthony Salvanto.

Herman Cain has moved into a tie with Mitt Romney atop the field of Republican presidential candidates, according to a new CBS News poll, while Rick Perry has fallen 11 percentage points in just two weeks.

(Credit: CBS) The poll shows Cain, who stood at just five percent support two weeks ago, now holding 17 percent support among Republican primary voters. That puts the former Godfather's Pizza CEO into a tie with Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, whose support has essentially held steady over the past two weeks.

Perry, meanwhile, has dropped from 23 percent support to just 12 percent support over the past two weeks, a sign that the Texas governor's shaky debate performances - in which he has alienated portions of both the Republican base and the party establishment - have taken their toll.

Eight in ten Republican primary voters said the candidates' debate performances are at least somewhat important to them, and 58 percent said they have watched the debates that have already taken place. Just ten percent of Republican primary voters said they agreed with Perry that the children of illegal immigrants should be allowed to get in-state tuition, a contentious topic in recent debates.

6. I don't believe this for a second
The Rethugs are using Cain was a weapon to beat Perry with. If they succeed, they'll toss Cain on the trash heap and force-feed us Romney.

Edited on Tue Oct-04-11 07:45 PM by bigdarryl
a miraculous COME BACK!!! and they will try and help him mark my word.Your going to start seeing pundits go after Cain more and more to try and bring his numbers down. Also Cain doesn't have the money like Perry has it's reported he raised 15 million dollars this quarter for a guy that is stumbling people are still flocking toward him with money keep an eye on the next debate I bet they will say after the debate he did better in this debate even though he probably won't.The media thrives on the COME BACK BEHIND shit

10. I agree.... I remember when McCain made his comeback in the 08 primary....
and prior when Bush Jr. made a comeback to beat McCain in the 2000 primary.

12. I can't help but think this has everything to do with the hunting lodge
it seems convenient.

The Republican front runner is caught with his pants down with a blatantly racist named lodge that has been used as a locus for Republican power broking, putting the question of racist republican in the for front during a primary where everyone is watching.

Then all of a sudden Cain come out of nowhere to a tie for the front runner position? Yeah right.

Now on the other hand the run of the mill republican is a follower at heart so they do run the risk of tricking themselves how funny would it be if they nominated Cain.

17. The hunting ranch thing should help Perry with the republican base. He will have to talk
a lot about Jesus and how much he hates gays to make up for the debate mistakes.

13. Republicans
I don't for a minute think Cain will actully win the nomination. The establishment Is now using him
to help Romney.Romney hardly ever moves In his support. Here Cain ties him.

If Obama makes the wealthy the centerpiece oh his economic platform Romney Is good poster child. He
has called the Occupy Wall Street movement playing class warfare.Romney has plenty that can be
hit with.

I never saw this coming, that Cain would be doing so well at this late date.

Whatever would the southern racists do next November if two black men are on the ballot?
