U.S. Chamber of Commerce hails the bipartisan approval of the new trade agreements
The US Chamber of Commerce also urged the president and lawmakers to build on it with an aggressive new trade agenda.

President Obama and Congress, working together and looking out for the American worker. Bipartisanship...isn't it lovely?

Passage of Free Trade Agreements Hailed
10/13/2011 6:46:00 AM - Article #19491

WASHINGTON D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce hailed the bipartisan Congressional approval of the trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia, and Panama and urged the president and lawmakers to build on it with an aggressive new trade agenda.

“Passing these trade agreements represents a victory for American workers, American competitiveness, and American leadership,” said Thomas J. Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber. “It means we will immediately stop losing jobs to our competitors who have cut their own deals and we can start creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs for Americans.”

“At a time when many people think Washington is broken, members of Congress from both parties and the administration put American jobs first by making these trade agreements a reality,” Donohue continued. He commended House Speaker John Boehner; Representatives Dave Camp, Kevin Brady, and Steny Hoyer; Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and Senators Max Baucus and Orrin Hatch; as well as President Obama, White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley, and Ambassador Ron Kirk for successfully carving a path forward to complete the trade agreements.

“Let’s make the approval of these agreements a foundation for moving bipartisan, job-creating policies forward,” Donohue said. He urged lawmakers to build on passage of these agreements with an aggressive new trade agenda, including swift negotiation of a Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

"U.S. Chamber of Commerce hails the bipartisan approval of the new trade agreements"

What the Chamber of Commerce does and doesn't support is not an indication of anything. If that's the best argument one can make against the deals, then that's not saying much.

Kerry

“These agreements make it clear that the United States will engage global partners on fair terms. I think it’s a virtue that the Administration stayed at the bargaining table to improve these agreements. Given that each negotiation sets a precedent for those that will follow, it’s imperative to strike the best possible agreement and I think that bar was exceeded here. The Korea agreement balances the playing field for U.S. automakers by giving them time to introduce their products to Korean consumers and adjust to a changing dynamic. We will continue to make progress on labor and other humanitarian issues as a result of changes to Colombian law and procedure. Labor laws in Panama will be better enforced and transparency in the banking sector will prevent Panama from being used as a tax haven. The ball is now in our court. Congress must consider and approve these agreements as soon as possible.”

Kerry was joined by 20, 31 and 37 Democrats on at least one of the deals.

President Obama has demonstrated that he will enforce U.S. trade agreements.

Roll Calls:

Colombia Trade Agreement

Panama Trade Agreement

Korea Free Trade Agreement

Chamber of Commerce Irks Democrats with Big Push for GOP

By BRODY MULLINS and SUSAN DAVIS

WASHINGTON -- The nation's largest business lobby, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, has raised ire among Democratic leaders for pouring millions of dollars into an advertising push to prevent the party from winning dominance in the Senate next year.

The Chamber says it has raised enough money this year from corporations to spend about $35 million on the election, double its budget for House and Senate races in the 2006 election. The group is supporting pro-business candidates, almost exclusively Republicans in contested Senate races.

5. That's not relevant to Prosense' post.

The point was that there are wins in these agreements that Obama is likely to follow through on given his history of doing so.

So what are in the agreements that YOU don't like. I'm pretty curious about what's in them myself.

8. Not directly, no. Logic does not dictate that 'if the Chamber hates it, it is good'.
It doesn't work like that.

However, I would lay odds that most of what they like, we wouldn't.

That's why I asked YOU a question.

What is it in the agreements that YOU don't like?

11. This
See bold

We are told KORUS will create more exports, but the principal exports will be American jobs. The Economic Policy Institute estimates that KORUS will cost us 159,000 jobs. The U.S. International Trade Commission also admits that KORUS will cause significant job losses. Those job losses will extend from low-end industries to electronic equipment manufacturing, where the victims will be Americans who were making an average wage of $30 an hour in 2008.

...

Among the many ways that South Korea puts up barriers against U.S. products is to subject any Korean brave enough to buy an American car to a discriminatory tax audit.

KORUS allows Korean products imported into the U.S. to have 65 percent non-South Korean content. Nobody will know how much of that 65 percent will be made by slave labor in North Korea or China
.

KORUS will give Korean corporations the right to challenge any U.S. law they think might limit their market access or profitability, including our prevailing wage laws. These trade agreements generally give foreigners the right to define free trade, which they do in ways that always disadvantage the U.S.

18. I spent my diligence on your links.

I agree, it does not look balanced.

I like to explore issues to whatever truth can be gleaned in the process. I imagine there's more here, but the fundamental point is that we're seeing a three-peat on NAFTA.

Yeah, I'd hoped.

But the reality is something far more horrific.

I'm pretty sure TCOC still supports Republicans by vast margins.

Seems I've missed something terribly large. I hate that. Could you elaborate, please?
