Thousands turn out for Sharpton-led rally in DC....
Edited on Sat Oct-15-11 02:37 PM by FrenchieCat

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Thousands of demonstrators have packed the lawn in the shadow of the Washington Monument to hear various labor, education and civil rights leaders, including the Rev. Al Sharpton.

The March on Washington for Jobs and Justice on Saturday is intended to drum up support for President Barack Obama's jobs plan.

Marchers Demand Action On Jobs Legislation

Organized by the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network, hundreds of people marched to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial to call attention to the country's unemployment woes.

"We come to take out country back to the people," Sharpton said at a rally that preceded the march.

The speakers reflected a mostly left-leaning ideology, but politicians from both parties were taken to task.

Walter Andrews, President of the Communication Workers of America, chastised both "mean-spirited Republicans" and "weak-kneed Democrats" in Congress.

"We demand jobs with justice," he said.

Washington D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray echoed that sentiment.

"We need a Congress that is going to act, that is going to stand up to create jobs," he said. "it's time for people to go back to work once again,"

...he warned lawmakers that, "If you can't stand up for the unemployed, we're going to vote to make sure you join the unemployed."

Sharpton blasts Senate failure to pass jobs bill

The Rev. Al Sharpton is condemning the Senate for failing to support President Barack Obama's jobs plan.

Sharpton spoke Saturday at the March on Washington for Jobs and Justice. He received cheers and applause when he said: "If you can't get the jobs bill done in the suites, then we will get the jobs bill done in the streets."

Sharpton says the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. would have supported the cause for the "cast down and cast back."

King's son Martin Luther King III also spoke. King invoked his father's words from a half-century ago, when the elder King talked about the need for redistributing wealth. King says his father believed America must redistribute wealth to survive responsibly.

1. Something is stirring in America's soul
and it's good....

Rev. MLK spoke about the very issues we are experiencing today and he was killed for it....make not mistake....lines can be drawn from his death, Robert Kennedy's death and others.......

I hope it continues to grow.

6. Wouldn't be surprised, however to be fair......
What really ticked me off, where was TV One and EUR? On top of that....CNN Live coverage was rediculous...it seemed the camera person was about 5 years old!:eyes:

The President can't get decent coverage and I guess only the repubs and tea party can with MSM.

I think the original DU some of us really appreciated is long gone.

37. only the repubs and tea party can
Edited on Mon Oct-17-11 01:31 AM by rpannier
Well...that's because it's easy to film a tea party rally
There are so few of them it's easy to fit them all in.
All you have to do is set the camera on a tripod, make he camera wide enough to get the bulk of the 32 people there in it, then go to lunch.
Come back in 4 hours and voila you have your video

on edit: You don't have to worry about them marching. They're in horrible shape and don't know their left from their right.

Hell...they don't know the Left from the Reich

12. You know how many DUers think Obama's job bill is a joke.
How can they then support a march that supports the bill?

15. 1.9 million jobs cannot be a joke......
There would be no reason for that.....
as it runs counter to a part of the entire point
to begin with.

If this is going to succeed it has to spread down every main street in America...not just the big cities, but in the suburbs, in the rural towns...we've got to change how this country thinks.

Yes we can!:toast:

It is kind of amazing!

I though the issue of Jobs and the AA community was a "concern"
here just a few weeks ago.

Seems like, instead....it depends.

22. We Luv The Reverend Al
no one on DU is purposely ignoring Al - many of us were at our local Occupy _______!
For one thing, MSNBC broke in on "My Dad is Pregnant" only to hear Al Sharpton, then back to the pregnant dad show.
Blink, and you would have missed it.

but lots of similar actions taking place all over (the WORLD,) so difficult to isolate on one.
Would love to hear your thoughts on what I'll call world-wide movement.

Seen this, Madrid protestors singing Ode to Joy?

4. Rev. Sharpton has a way of articulating what so many think and feel
but don't know how to put it. People are starting to wake up and realize they're being used and abused. When it comes time to recognize an American "for the people" I hope they don't forget the good Reverend. He's brought a lot of heart, soul and hope to many of us.

34. I can't get enthused over made in China statue
Edited on Sun Oct-16-11 07:49 PM by Mimosa
Even the stones were shipped from China, assembled by Chinese workers...

Martin Luther King was born in Georgia, where there are granite and marble quarries. Nearby Alabama (remember King also pastored in Montgomery AL) also has some of the world's best marble and granite.

This monument was not designed by an American or even a black artist. It's depressing that the Memorial commission paid for Chinese designers, stones and labor when American artists and workers are begging for work.

I love MLK. Do not like outsourcing. :(

folks were distracted yesterday with Occupy movements worldwide and Citibank having folks arrested for trying to close their bank accounts. I'm glad to see this news!

28. good for them - but we've been there before - "We" 've been out there forever -
- including the past three years - despite your sig which seems to imply that we haven't been.

- how many people did the Labor and other movements put in DC last Oct? Did it get us anywhere?

- I can't even count how many rallies - mostly small but so what? they were local, and going on all over - and some large - that I've been at in the past three years - they've been going on everywhere - and not to mention Wisconsin

- I am all for Sharpton and glad to see everyone there - I want to see us out everywhere, all the time.

but to imply - as you seem to be doing with that tired sig - that OWS is somehow less important or significant because they are not going RaRaObama or VoteD is simply silly

And while I'm glad to see people out, to put all that energy into supporting Obama's feeble "jobs" plan - so much less than we need, just like the first "stimulus" - and so packed with goodies for our Corp masters too - seems a waste of good energy to me, other than the benefit of just being out there saying "we want jobs" - which is always good

- oh, and when we said "yes, we can!" back in '08, we thought Obama was one of "we."

31. Agree --- like stimulus with BILLIONS in lucrative new contracts for corporations ---
not much there there -- !!

Cheers to Sharpton -- however -- and all the OWS fighting for jobs --

25 million Americans in fact!!

66 million living in poverty

43 million on food stamps -- think that's the number!!

50 milllion without health care --

The "We can" also implies that Obama and the rest of us are on the same team --

rather Obama's team is working against the interests of the public.
