9. No, the crew that was with the ship when he became captain.
Edited on Sun Oct-16-11 05:54 PM by ClarkUSA
The ones who obstruct every decision the captain makes by making sure the ship can't steer smoothly. They want him to fail because they want a different captain of their own ilk badly enough that they're willing to risk hitting the iceberg to show what a lousy captain he is so he'll be fired.

31. Third Way Democrats
have virtually the same policy agenda as Republicans:

www.thirdway.org

The Third Way did not arise from the grass roots. It is a deliberate infiltration of the party by banks and corporations.

16. Kinda hard not to when your own crew has slashed the rudder chains and taken a wrench
to the turbines.

But hey, the passengers don't give a shit--they're too busy yelling at the captain who's trying to steer a ship that literally can't change direction.

20. The President is not 'Captain of a Ship' since he is an elected representative.
I'm not going to try to remind anybody of the Constitutional duties of the president of the United States.

I seriously doubt anybody but right wing Republicans want to destroy the President.

Most Democrats want President Obama to succeed in accomplishing the pledges he made when he won our votes.

move to center, soon after he wins the nomination. Did Obama just approve the new trade pact with 3 countries? The march to center has begun.

26. I remember that sinking ship metaphor of Jackson's
I didn't remember the part about the captain, because that was only about 0.1% of the metaphor. Jackson was focusing 99.9% on the people drowning in the hull, i.e. the poor people.

He says, "Most, however, seem focused on protecting those in posh cabins, on the upper decks."

Of all the parts to excerpt, from an essay devoted to focusing attention on poor people, some people here at DU have chosen the part about the captain.

Here's a version that appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times:

29. Creative social science, creative statistics, creative editing

"The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
But O heart! heart! heart!"

A creatively snippet of Whitman.

30. Rev. Jackson said this yesterday at the MLK event
I did not pull this quote from his Sun-Times piece. I quoted from his speech - accurately and in context.

However, it's kind of amusing to see YOU criticize anyone for choosing part of someone's remarks to quote . . . :-)
