TASTE TEST: Herman Cain Turned Godfather's Into Cheap And Crappy Pizza
Godfather's pizza apparently sucks.

At least that was the overwhelming conclusion from Politico's recent blind taste test.

They lined up five pizza brands -- Godfather's, Papa John's, Pizza Hut, zpizza and Ledo Pizza -- in front of Republican strategist and restaurant writer Doug Heye, Democratic commentator Karen Finney and foodie Nycci Nellis, publisher of TheListAreYouOnIt.com.

All three of them rated Godfather's dead last. Here are their comments from before they knew which slice was which, from Politico:

“It’s the most unappetizing,” said Nellis after just one bite. “The cheese is really sour! The crust is like a sponge.”

“That is so bad,” said Finney.

“The crust is trying to be thin crust and thick crust, it can’t make up what it is,” said Heye. “Not good.”

You really have to work hard to screw up pizza. Pizza normally is like sex, even when it's bad, it's still pretty good.

4. Never had any of those other than Pizza Hut - and it is hard to imagine it is worse than that!
I looked at their web site and found the nearest location was over 20 miles a way. I really never understood how any of the pizza chains could sell any pizza in NJ as the local (non affiliated) pizza places are SO much better.

9. I apologize for lack of sensitivity- I never thought of pizza as expensive.
I suspect that $5 is cheaper than the homemade pizza the kids and I made, much less the pizza places - though even there a 16 inch pizza was $12.00. (I looked at their website)

8. After 15 or so years of NY/NJ pizza
I can't imagine anyone enjoying a chain pizza joint. I could go to any town and throw a stone to a better pizza joint. Even back here in W.PA, I found a good 18" pepperoni pie for under $10.

15. I envy you.
I moved from Philadelphia to rural West Georgia...frozen grocery store pizza is better than what they sell in most pizza places here.

16. I didn't mention the south but I know too well what you mean
I've never had an edible Italian or Italian/American meal south of Virginia except for Ybor City.

12. You beat me to it, karynnj. Anything rated lower than Pizza Hut has to be inedible.

6. Bogus test - quality is NOT directly related to brand name, no matter what they tell you
Usually the best pizza in any town is the newest place in town. They will provide the best pizza in town until they build up a clientele, then they cut costs until they're competitive.

But I would expect, as a matter of course, Godfathers, Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, and anything else like them to ALL be bad - they're mass-produced pizza designed for America's junk-food tastes.

20. Huh
A chain store pizza will taste more or less the same whether you buy it in Detroit or Denver.

7. I stopped ordering Godfather pizza when it arrived with the extra protein of a roach on top.
Really, I was amazed they couldn't be bothered to look at it and take it off before delivering it.

I never ate Godfather pizza after that.

11. zpizza, a smallish California woman-owned chain, is not really in the same category
as Pizza Hut or Papa John's, let alone Godfather's. :puke:

Just months after moving to the Bay Area, I found myself at their Mountain View location, thoroughly enjoying a slice with arugula on it! Like, omigod! Totally!

Never heard of Ledo's.

14. I've had just one Godfather's Pizza, back in the early 1990's
and it so so awful that even though it was cheap, I never had one again.

17. I have the same opinion about Godfather's pizza
It is hard to believe the company became profitable.
People are stupid or have poor taste.

21. Godfather's is awful. We tried it once, in Nebraska, and never went back.
Edited on Thu Oct-20-11 10:22 AM by TwilightGardener
As far as the big chains go, Pizza Hut is still the best. I grew up on Pan Pizza, still crave it sometimes. Edit to add: Domino's is getting much better, though--they have really improved. They used to have inedible crust.

22. Living in this city with the best pizza in the U.S. , I can tell you that you
won't find Godfather's pizza any time soon...even our little pizza joints have superb pizza (my neighborhood one is Dayton St. pizza, and it's a real hole in the wall...)
