NBC/WSJ Poll: Obama Improves Against Romney

NBC/WSJ Poll: Obama Improves Against Romney

Kyle Leighton

President Obama has had some political successes over the past month or so after a miserable summer in Washington — Obama took his jobs message on the road and pushed back against the horrible tide created by the debt ceiling fight. Now a new poll from NBC News and the Wall Street Journal shows while his economic numbers are down, no GOP candidate has pushed past him in a general election match-up, and Obama is actually improving against his possible foes.

NBC/WSJ shows that President Obama bests former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney by six points, 49 to 43 percent nationally, and crushes businessman Herman Cain by fifteen points. The poll was conducted completely after allegations of sexual harassment were levied against Cain from his days at the National Restaurant Association, but not before Monday’s press conference of another woman who alleged a more serious sexual charge against him.

The key seems to be that while Obama’s numbers on handling the economy are down (the President’s approval on the issue is only 40 percent against 57 disapproval), he’s viewed as a much better option that Romney on other fronts, and still competes against the former MA Gov. in light of his jobs push. From NBC.com:

Against Romney, Obama holds a sizable advantages on being compassionate and understanding average people; on being knowledgeable and experienced enough to handle the presidency; on being consistent and standing up for his beliefs; and on being a good commander-in-chief.

But Romney leads — albeit narrowly — on what’s shaping up to be the top issue in next year’s presidential election: having good ideas for how to improve the economy.

The new data confirms a Quinnipiac poll that showed Obama improving on his general approval rating and in Presidential match-ups, and a trend of three new polls that show Americans believe Congressional Republicans are holding up the jobs package for political reasons. It seems that combining the relative popularity of the jobs bill, the political maneuvering of Republicans in Congress and the President’s roadshow outside of DC has moved a few voters to his side.

1. And these numbers are during a time when Romney is hardly being attacked by anyone while
the Repubs. are constantly attacking Obama during their infinite number of primary debates. Could you imagine how much stronger Obama will get and how much weaker Romney will get once Obama starts campaigning?

everyone seems to think he'd be the best Repub. to beat Obama. Well, if he's the best they got, I guess their best isn't good enough... :hi:

4. I expect ups & downs, between now & election day, but I'm always glad when....
the president gets outside the DC bubble. He connects so much better, on the road, than those stuffy Oval Office addresses. He's in his element, when he's working the crowd. I only hope these numbers continue to improve, along with the economy.

5. I just want to see him turn DC INTO HIS ELEMENT...
I am fully aware that Barrack Obama is the most talented stump speaker I have witnessed...he is a master campaigner as well; however, the zeal and passion of the stump do not follow him to policy and that is jarring and a MASSIVE problem for him no matter how batshit crazy the Republican candidate pool is!

Put it this way...a LOT of people who supported Obama and believed in his message of HOPE AND CHANGE are now assembled in public places from coast to coast under the OCCUPY banner of discontent and protest.

The energy and hopefulness of 2007-2008 is not found anymore and the pall of the stagnant economy and the continued rape of the middle class to fund the 1% is creating an atmosphere where a plurality of votes will win the day. Clinton was fortunate to have Perot provide the wedge of dissent for crazy people in '92 and '96...just enough to make a difference. I won't rehash '00 or '04 any further than to say if the election is close it is stolen, period, full-stop.

6. And I wish elephants were pocket sized.
:eyes:
Everyone knows Washington is broken. And the "disillusioned" can kiss my ass. Most economists say it will take years, no matter who's in the WH, to correct what went wrong. If OWS is so unfocused as to blame to current economic situation on this president, then they're useless, AFAIC.

Poll after poll shows that moderates and independents (where the actual work gets done) believe that Republicans are intentionally stalling any economic recovery to win an election. I say that, because very little gets done on the fringes, because ideology trumps reason every time. I'm not sure what the protesters hoped for, and I don't buy this garbage, mainly spouted by the GOP think tanks, and 3rd party advocates that this president is such a disappointment to his supporters.

Disillusionment is useless as we saw in 2010. Who did they think they were hurting? And where were all these utopian progressive candidates that could have wrested Congress from the teanuttery we've come to know? They sat on their asses, during the Summer of Hate, mostly because they didn't want to confront the hate and possible violence that was the Tea Party.

The enthusiasm for "movement" type politics comes a bit late, doncha think? This "movement" would have been very helpful during the healthcare debate. Instead, we had people like Jane Hamsher-Norquist telling her readers to "Kill the Bill". Why weren't they lining the halls of Congress to get the single payer they so desired? More power to OWS, but I think it's come a bit late.

7. All of that may be true but this is how OWS unwittingly helps PBO...
Edited on Tue Nov-08-11 10:48 AM by Kahuna
They draw the focus onto a person like Mitt, who IS Wall St and the 1%. Every time mitt opens his mouth he reminds everyone that he is the person, OWS is protesting against. Thanks OWS!

10. On this we agree.

But the poster implies that this protest is against Pres. Obama as well. If that's the case, then I have little use for OWS. I'm seeing this more & more, on the left & the right, where people are trying to score points against this president by invoking OWS. :hi:
