I made a thread that my line in the sand for supporting Obama in 2012 is how he deals with social security. Lots of people seemed to agree. That thread was locked. Does this mean that in order to be a contributing member of DU you have to support the election of any democrat, anywhere, anytime no matter what that democrat does or what that democrat stands for?

Doesn't that seem a bit, well, crazy?

1. That doesn't seem crazy. Here's "crazy":
Crazy is choosing not to vote when the choice is between President Obama and any of the likely 2012 republican presidential candidates.

DU supports Democrats and opposes Republicans.

2. I think supporting democratic (progressive) principles is far less crazy then supporting democrats
no matter what those democrats do. Having to support a candidate even if that candidate tries to dismantle every progressive ideal you believe in doesn't rub me the right way.

You might not agree with that as I'm sure many people don't. And that's fine. But not being able to debate this openly in a community you've been a part of for 7 years with members you've grown to respect is a real shame. And I would hope that this is something that can be reconsidered.

3. Here's something that "doesn't rub me the right way":
Letting people use my website to help Republicans.

4.  But using it to help democrats cut social security (or atleast look the other way) is a-okay.
It is your site and you get to decide the rules. After all, nobody is forced to be here.

I do appreciate the response, thanks.
