Remembering one of the all-time greats........

Howard Zinn, 1922-2010

"If those in charge of our society - politicians, corporate executives, and owners of press and television - can dominate our ideas, they will be secure in their power. They will not need soldiers patrolling the streets. We will control ourselves."

.........

"War itself is the enemy of the human race."

.........

"Well, do you get the feeling sometime that you're living in an occupied country? Very often that's a feeling I get when I wake up in the morning. I think, "I'm living in an occupied country. A small group of aliens have taken over the country and are trying to do with it what they will, you know, and really are." I mean, they are alien to me. I mean, those people who are coming across the border from Mexico, they are not alien to me, you see. You know, Muslims who come to this country to live, they are not alien to me, you see. These demonstrations, these wonderful demonstrations that we have seen very recently on behalf of immigrant rights, say, and you've seen those signs saying, you know, "No human being is alien." And I think that's true. Except for the people in Washington, you see.

They've taken over the country. They've taken over the policy. They've driven us into two disastrous wars, disastrous for our country and even more disastrous for people in the Middle East. And they have sucked up the wealth of this country and given it to the rich, and given it to the multinationals, given it to Halliburton, given it to the makers of weapons. They're ruining the environment. And they're holding on to 10,000 nuclear weapons, while they want us to worry about the fact that Iran may, in ten years, get one nuclear weapon. You see, really, how mad can you be?"

.........

"We were not born critical of existing society. There was a moment in our lives (or a month, or a year) when certain facts appeared before us, startled us, and then caused us to question beliefs that were strongly fixed in our consciousness - embedded there by years of family prejudices, orthodox schooling, imbibing of newspapers, radio, and television."

.........

"Behind the deceptive words designed to entice people into supporting violence -- words like democracy, freedom, self-defense, national security -- there is the reality of enormous wealth in the hands of a few, while billions of people in the world are hungry, sick, homeless."

.........

"Terrorism has replaced Communism as the rationale for the militarization of the country, for military adventures abroad, and for the suppression of civil liberties at home. It serves the same purpose, serving to create hysteria."

.........

"Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience. Our problem is that people all over the world have obeyed the dictates of leaders…and millions have been killed because of this obedience…Our problem is that people are obedient allover the world in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war, and cruelty. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves… (and) the grand thieves are running the country. That’s our problem."

.........

"To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.

What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.
And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory."

.........

"The challenge remains. On the other side are formidable forces: money, political power, the major media. On our side are the people of the world and a power greater than money or weapons: the truth.
Truth has a power of its own. Art has a power of its own. That age-old lesson – that everything we do matters – is the meaning of the people’s struggle here in the United States and everywhere. A poem can inspire a movement. A pamphlet can spark a revolution. Civil disobedience can arouse people and provoke us to think, when we organize with one another, when we get involved, when we stand up and speak out together, we can create a power no government can suppress. We live in a beautiful country. But people who have no respect for human life, freedom, or justice have taken it over. It is now up to all of us to take it back."

esp. re- "Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience." -- where, when did he say or write that?

(I'm a stickler for referring to the actual sources, since it helps people determine when things are being distorted, intentionally or unintentionally.)

Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience."
– Howard Zinn, Failure to Quit (South End Press, 2002; originally published 1993)

I like to give the original source, rather than linking to other sites that just repeat the attribution without specifying where it's from -- I've found through experience that there are lots of "urban myths" out there about who said what, that get repeated all over the internet even though they're inaccurate.

I hope no one will take this the wrong way. It's just that there's so much DIS-info out there (conservatives claiming people said things they didn't), and I see this as one way to help combat it.

(I admit I'm also feeling upset lately over the amount of disinfo spouted by DU'er's who haven't bothered to read original sources. This does NOT include you, marmar -- I always look for and appreciate your contributions.)

20. It was by reading Howard Zinn's marvelous history of
Our United States, that I learned that back in the 1890's, the Republicans had advertisements supporting the striking workers in all the main Chicago newspapers.

Now we cannot get anyone from either party to care even a little about the workers. (And the unemployed.)

Edited on Sun Jan-02-11 09:43 AM by QC
Summer before last, I logged on to DU to find a Zinn thread full of posts (mostly by the newly arrived Pragmatic Sensibles, of course) loudly denouncing him as a lying commie who hated America and a bad scholar besides.

I knew then that this place truly had changed in a profound way.

36. Howard Zinn
was the greatest, IMO, men of all times. It is sad to realize that he was not the most influential. When I mention him, hardly anyone knows who I am talking about. Even my Daughter, who graduates from college this year as a H.S. history teacher.
Hopefully, he, like many famous people, will become well known and inspirational in death.
Thank you Mr. Zinn for your great insights and participation on the side of the average person. RIP
