I hope everyone had a good new years eve
We went to some friends for some smoke and drink. I was designated driver so I didn't get the drink. I didn't see one cop on the way home about 1:30 this morning. This was a first for me, being the designated driver that is. You know what I didn't miss drinking at all either so I guess that means I've come full circle. I feel I can honestly say that I'm a non drinker now after all those years of drinking.

Happy new years :hi:
Peace

1. Grandma and I were in bed by 10
I woke up at 12:15 and let the dog out. When I opened the door I could hear rifle shots coming from way down the hill about four miles away. A LOT of rifle shots. Must have been a meeting of our local MENSA chapter. I expect to read in the paper that one of our rocket scientists was killed or maimed by a bullet that he fired into the air to celebrate the new year.

Anyway it scared the dog. He ran over, pissed on a fence post and zoomed back into the house.

That was the big excitement around here on New Years Eve.

Happy new year back atcha.

2. I've often wondered the wisdom of shooting up into the air
the projectile has to come back down and it'd be bummer if It came down and hit someone or their pets.

6. When I was a kid there was an incident here
Don't remember that it was New Years but some idiot shot a gun in the air and his neighbor was killed when the bullet hit him in the top of the head. It took the cops awhile to figure out what happened and who had shot the gun but they did eventually find the shooter.

I think of that every time I hear about folks shooting guns into the air.

Happy New Year, madokie! :hi:

8. There's a MythBuster episode on that...
If it's straight up it's not so bad coming down. If it's shot at an angle there can be considerably more energy at impact.

In any event, it's not too bright, especially when alcohol is involved.

9. It's unwise, particularly with handguns and rifles.
One can get away with it using shotguns loaded with birdshot (which is what birdshot is made for, after all) because terminal velocity of birdshot is way too low to cause injury. Bullets, slugs, or heavy shot fired into the air (especially at an angle) can still be lethal when they come back down, though.

4. Good for you, madokie
I went to bed before 10 and got up before 5, feeling great. The only drama in my new year so far is that my newspaper wasn't delivered. Boo hoo. At least there has been no gunfire in the neighborhood!

Happy New Year, madokie! Best wishes for a prosperous new year to all of us...

Love & Peace,
pinboy3niner

5. I finished the novel I was reading at 10 pm
& went to bed. My wife stayed up for the New Year doing something on her computer. She said she noticed it was a few minutes after 12 on her computer clock. We had more people around than we're used to for Christmas, and were happy for the quiet. I got up at about 7 this morning (we geezers like our sleep), meditated for 50 minutes & got on with reorganizing my office. We're now listening to opera from the Met on PBS.

This afternoon two extremely rare events will happen simultaneously.
1) I will watch TV.
2) I will watch a football game. The Rose Bowl, to be specific.

The last time these 2 events occurred simultaneously was the last time the Badgers went to the Rose Bowl. That time it was just a game. This time, it's practically personal, ever since I heard about some dimwitted Texas DJ saying it was the Texas Christians against the Madison Socialists. I tell ya, we gotta stomp 'em into the ground.

7. I spent the evening at the emergency room.
My spouse had a serious medical issue going on. It was damned scary, and took quite awhile to get the problem resolved. I am grateful for the good ER care, that they didn't take time to triage him before wheeling him to a room, that a very competent doctor went right to work on him, and am further grateful we have insurance--Medicare with a good supplemental. It was an interesting way to end 2010, which hasn't really been a bonanza year in our lives, but we've survived, and if not for the fact that repubs are now in charge, I'd hold out hope 2011 will be better.

Glad your NYE went well! BTW, my Tulsa cousin called me on Christmas Eve, and we had a nice conversation during which I greatly enjoyed his southern drawl!

Peace, blessings and Happy New Year to you.
