Pitt fires Haywood after arrest

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Pittsburgh has fired football coach Mike Haywood, a day after he was arrested on a domestic violence charge.

He was arrested Friday following an incident at his South Bend home, said an officer at the St. Joseph County Jail who declined to give her name. She said Haywood was scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Haywood was released on $1,000 cash bond Saturday after the charge was upgraded to a felony.

Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg says in a statement that coaches "are expected to maintain high standards of personal conduct and to avoid situations that might reflect negatively on the university."

Pittsburgh hired Haywood away from Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 16 to replace Dave Wannstedt, who resigned under pressure.

2. It was a custody dispute...
He smacked his significant other around and he choked her.
I'm surprised they let him out before Monday rolled around.
I know he was being held on a "judge ordered bond" so I guess he got to see one today.

5. Bloggers on Pittsburgh's Post-Gazette are nearly unanimous

in approving his firing.

This from the Post-Gazette's story:
Pitt Chancellor Mark Nordenberg released the following statement this evening regarding Mike Haywood, who was named the new football coach last month: "After careful consideration of recent events, the University of Pittsburgh has dismissed Michael Haywood as its head football coach, effective immediately. He was advised of that action this afternoon.

"To be clear, the University's decision is not tied to any expectation with respect to the terms on which the legal proceeding now pending in Indiana might ultimately be concluded. Instead, it reflects a strong belief that moving forward with Mr. Haywood as our head coach is not possible under the existing circumstances.

"This is a matter of real regret for the many people at Pitt who had looked forward to working with him. However, head coaches are among the University's most visible representatives and are expected to maintain high standards of personal conduct and to avoid situations that might reflect negatively on the University.

6. Pitt had to do this
They were bringing this jerk in to discpline the team who had numerous instances of football players getting arrested and in to fights. Glad Pitt booted him.
