No resistance in ‘cold-blooded’ U.S. raid: Pakistan officials

ABBOTTABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - Osama bin Laden and his comrades offered no resistance when killed by U.S. special forces in a Pakistani town, Pakistani security officials said on Thursday.

U.S. accounts of what happened have changed throughout the week, and initial characterizations of a 40-minute gun battle have given way to officials being quoted as saying only one of the five people who were killed had been armed.

The White House has cited the "fog of war" as a reason for initial misinformation on whether bin Laden -- who was shot in the head -- was armed when U.S. Navy SEALs raided his compound in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad early on Monday.

Two senior Pakistani security officials, citing their investigation, said there was no firefight because the inhabitants never fired back.

The initial reports were based on quick versions and somewhat disorganized. and confused That's how life works. As debriefings happened, the reports crystallized. That's how life works.

Of course, I'm not a "critical thinker," as the conspiracy nuts say, which is to say, I understand that not every inconsistency is meaningful, that people make mistakes or speak too soon, that the world is messy, as is representation. In fact, the Navy SEALs, when they train for these sorts of raids, try very hard to arrange them so that they're catching their targets with their pants down.

They make no assumptions, and act as though they're walking into an ambush, and come armed and ready. But hey, if things go right and they succeed in surprising their targets, so much the better.

Bin Laden should have thought of this before he decided to have airplanes crash into buildings, killing 3,000 people. He had it coming!
