LA museum whitewashes anti-war mural
MOCA erases commissioned work within 24hrs

by Rob Maguire on December 11, 2010

This past week, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles commissioned Blu, an international street art rock star, to paint a mural on a nearby wall in conjunction with their upcoming Art in the Street exhibition.

Less than 24 hours later, the same museum ordered the work destroyed.

For an uncomfortably long time, MOCA remained mum as to why they rushed to cover up the work, which featured rows of coffins draped in dollar bills. Then, they finally issued a response, stating that the work was “inappropriate” given that their neighbourhood included a war monument and a veterans’ hospital.

Whether MOCA believes the needless deaths of young soldiers and civilians is inappropriate in unclear.

6. At least those of us in the "cannon fodder" category...
... can make a complete sentence.

I'm sure that you are much smarter than every one of the millions of American veterans.... It must be nice... :eyes:

7. Uh, I am in the that group of military veterans.
Sorry to burst your self righteous bubble. But if you wish to believe you were fighting for god, country and mary jane rotten crotches honor, knock yourself out.

9. Maybe your intentions...
... were simple enough to fit in the blurb on a movie poster.

I think the rest of us might be a bit more complex....

10. Okay. How about outright silencing?
And it is easily understood to be what?
I don't easily understand it.
I think the museum acted badly and the artist should sue.

3. Wow. Just wow. Like they're just ASSuming that noone visiting the war monument
or at the VA hospital might be anti-war??

What. The. Fuck.

This is wrong on so many levels. Recced for more exposure even though the story is pretty damn despicable.

4. So who is the faceless coward who ordered the destruction?
And I wonder if the art museum board would be as wanton if the piece was titled "Guernica".

5. The High Church of Redemptive Violence does not brook heresy
It's very distressing to worshippers at the shrines to be discomfiting by opposing viewpoints. We only spend over a billion dollars a day, every day, in service to redemptive violence. A mural could negate every last nickel of the goodwill bought by those tax dollars. It had to be whitewashed to maintain the sanctity and the purity of our national religion.
