Roseanne Barr Just Became a Goddess

Roseanne Barr Just Became a Goddess
by bink

You never see anything like this in print in the mainstream press anymore. She comes across as so completely sensible and yet so completely radical in telling some bitter and funny tales from her life as an actress on the sitcom "Roseanne."
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/05/17/976732/-Roseanne-Barr-Just-Became-a-Goddess?via=siderecent

And I Should Know
Roseanne Barr was a sitcom star, a creator and a product, the agitator and the abused, a domestic goddess and a feminist pioneer. That was twenty years ago. But as far as she’s concerned, not much has changed.
http://nymag.com/print/?/arts/tv/upfronts/2011/roseanne-barr-2011-5/

..........................

It didn’t take long for me to get a taste of the staggering sexism and class bigotry that would make the first season of Roseanne god-awful. It was at the premiere party when I learned that my stories and ideas—and the ideas of my sister and my first husband, Bill—had been stolen. The pilot was screened, and I saw the opening credits for the first time, which included this: CREATED BY MATT WILLIAMS. I was devastated and felt so betrayed that I stood up and left the party. Not one person noticed.

I confronted Marcy under the bleachers on the sound stage when we were shooting the next episode. I asked her how I could continue working for a woman who had let a man take credit for my work—who wouldn’t even share credit with me—after talking to me about sisterhood and all that bullshit. She started crying and said, “I guess I’m going to have to tell Brandon that I can’t deliver this show.” I said, “Cry all you want to, but you figure out a way to put my name on the show I created, or kiss my ass good-bye.”

..............

I grabbed a pair of wardrobe scissors and ran up to the big house to confront the producer. (The “big house” was what I called the writers’ building. I rarely went there, since it was disgusting. Within minutes, one of the writers would crack a stinky-pussy joke that would make me want to murder them. Male writers have zero interest in being nice to women, including their own assistants, few of whom are ever promoted to the rank of “writer,” even though they do all the work while the guys sit on their asses taking the credit. Those are the women who deserve the utmost respect.) I walked into this woman’s office, held the scissors up to show her I meant business, and said, “Bitch, do you want me to cut you?” We stood there for a second or two, just so I could make sure she was receptive to my POV. I asked why she had told the wardrobe master to not listen to me, and she said, “Because we do not like the way you choose to portray this character.” I said, “This is no fucking character! This is my show, and I created it—not Matt, and not Carsey-Werner, and not ABC. You watch me. I will win this battle if I have to kill every last white bitch in high heels around here.”

No, Roseanne has been a goddess for a very long time, a flawed one perhaps but who among us is perfect?

6. Different strokes and all that..
I spent a couple of years very ill and laid up with TV as my only entertainment, it got to the point there were only about half a dozen shows I could stomach any more, Roseanne and Grace Under Pressure were two of them.

Seeing a reasonably accurate depiction of blue collar life on the TV is remarkable.

Brett Butler, just as many comedians are flawed human beings like us all, has a fierce integrity about her material and is a damn good comic.

31. John Goodman and Roseanne Barr
portrayed a great couple and the family interactions were very realistic. When I was sick and housebound a couple years ago, I ended up watching late night reruns of Roseanne. I had forgotten how good the show was. My favorite character was Dan, but that could be because Goodman is such an accomplished actor. I've known people like the Connors, though they weren't nearly as funny as a rule.

They find their kid's pot - and they end up smoking it!

They discover their daughter is having sex on the couch with her boyfriend.

It doesn't sound ground breaking now - but for the end of the eighties, when the word "B___ch!" was not even used on family sit coms, it definitely was a break through in the TV paradigm.

75. It makes life so much more interesting
than being married to a "yes dear" doormat.

You don't realize how poorly most married couples are portrayed on TV until you see one that is so realistic, you'd swear they lived next door. Unlike most sitcoms, the show isn't nonstop wisecracks. There are many real moments where the parents actually get angry, sometimes even throw things or slam doors. When Dan gets mad, he reminds me of good-natured men I've known who can be pushed too far, and everyone gets out of his way.

AND the house is messy!

64. I loved Roseanne's show....
realistic and so damn funny. I had many good laughs with her and her TV family.

Sexism is alive and well on today's TV shows. It's as if the Women's Movement never occurred....except women now get to be doctors, lawyers, and cops who are sex objects wearing short skirts and revealing mucho cleavage. Of course secretaries don't exist anymore (typists, obsolete; keyboarding, cool dudes).

I would love to hear more of Roseanne's stories.

I still have my key change with 'Bitch Goddess' on it. A gift from a friend in '89.

33. Her, or her character?
Her show aired while I was in theatre school, and I had a class that was assigned to watch the show every week... I didn't watch TV at all at that time ( It was theatre or NOTHING! Harrumph! ) and I was in great personal pain for the first two weeks. Then something struck me, something in a line... I wish I could remember the exact words, but it had to do with how people perceive others, and how many Americans would turn their noses up at their house, their life, etc., but the honesty within the family trumped all the snobbery.

There was actually a lot of deep thought and social commentary in those shows... it was all rather stealth.

I don't like her voice... nasal tones make me want to scratch my brain with a knitting needle through the ear or nose. Her acting wasn't all that either, but the writing was damn fine. You didn't need to "get" it to enjoy it.

Reading between the lines, I think I hear her saying she may have been a bit of both of those things as well, but that a goodly chunk of her pugnacity was in defense to the casual showbiz b.s. showered on her. Rings true.

I saw it growing up. However, the main female character was not very strong. It was hard to relate to Edith taking the "Stifle Yourself" commands from Archie. Although I must say, it was a good portrayal of the differences in the generations at the time.

she wasn't blink to Archie's faults but she saw it as her job to hold things together and in that way she was very strong.

And it was "All in the Family" who gave us Edith's cousin "Maude" (Bea Arthur) who knew how to put Archie in his place.

21. Here's a link that gives you access to all four pages of article...
http://nymag.com/arts/tv/upfronts/2011/roseanne-barr-2011-5/

I have always found that Roseanne's worst detractors seemed to be put off by her for depicting a "struggling lower middle class" existence in a very real way. Her honesty was brutal at times and tended to make a lot of people pretty uncomfortable. Even among my extended family, there were those who just detested her and her show. Yet, would have readily watched a similar show featuring a man.

I've always had a soft spot for those who are ground-breakers--even if they are brutally blunt. I think Roseanne deserves credit.

30. I've always liked Roseanne and I understand why she had to act as she did
She was a little known female stand-up comedian - she had zero power and would have gotten screwed over at every turn if she didn't become a "bitch". Her ego did get the best of her, she lost talented writers because of it and the last few seasons of the show were horrible but every TV show jumps the proverbial shark at some point, at least "Roseanne" did so on her own terms.

48. If she didn't act like that the show would have sucked
Hollywood sucks for women I had a taste of it when I was in film school in LA. Hell, Hollywood kind of sucks for men too it's very cut throat.

51. Agreed...It's hard to take a woman complaining about sexism seriously, when
she addresses another woman as "bitch":eyes:

I'd be more impressed if she showed all that toughness

with the guy taking credit for her work.

40. I understand why this behavior is tolerated in sports.

Hard to be hitting a guy one second, then Mr Professional the next.

But in every job I have ever held, "stinky pussy" would be immediate grounds for discharge.

Calling your boss "bitch" would get you fired.

Threatening someone with scissors would get you ... well, thrown in fucking jail.

And we hear stories like this all the time out of Hollywood. I do not understand why the TV and movie industry is allowed to behave so unprofessionally.

66. You paint such an
ideal picture....gosh, I wish it were reality. Those with power will do whatever they want and get away with it. And if the powerful wants to get rid of someone, it's done with lies.

'Bitch' is spoken on TV during prime time. Women are called 'bitches' on DU all the time.

I wish I could work in a place where sexism wasn't allowed. Have you ever watched Jon Stewart talk about women?

77. DU is not work. Watching TV is not work.

I have worked three places in my career. And angrily calling someone a "bitch" was grounds for firing in all three.

So, yes, it *is* reality in a *lot* of the world.

Her state representative comes to door and explains how corporate tax incentives will bring jobs. She nails him.

61. Fascinating. We just got a box set of Roseanne DVDs
I had no idea she was the chief creator of the show (with her husband).

It probably explained some of the great performances she gave as a working-class mother, pissed at all the bullshit in the world.

One of the few American tv shows that didn't make me cringe at the cheap sentiments and sickly moralizing.
