High School Students Accused Of Killing Chicken For Cookout
High School Students Accused Of Killing Chicken For Cookout

BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. -- Two Brooke High School students are accused of killing a chicken outside of a vocational classroom with the intentions of eating it at a cookout, the superintendent said.

NEWS9 received an email about the incident Thursday night, and Superintendent Kathy Kidder confirmed it happened.

Two male students, a senior and a junior, were involved, Kidder said. She said they were disciplined immediately. She said the extent of the students' punishment won't be known until the school board finished its investigation.

Kidder said the students had asked the principal if they could have a cookout earlier in the week and were told no. However, the students then went to the vocational director, who approved the cookout, unaware of the principal's decision.

4. So if the Tyson company kills the chicken,
it's healthy and normal, but if *you* kill it yourself, there's a problem. Okay.

5. So What?
Raising a nation of frightened people who think food comes wrapped in plastic or paper boxes.

I have seen a walking breathing chicken turned into food and enjoyed it a few hours later. It is the way of the world.

7. I don't think it was their chicken. That makes it an extremely serious crime worthy
of coverage. If only more reporters would look into this sort of thing, our nation would not have the financial crisis we do.

Hmmm..

"I wonder how that lobster magically got from the tank to my plate?"

They must have some sort of magician with some sort of magical device that did this!

Yeah, the magician is called a cook, and the magical device is a pot of boiling water.

15. The only thing I see that they should be punished for is
going to a second authority figure for permission after the first one said no. Maybe these kids should be taught where their food really comes from.

it sounds more like it's the adults involved who are more deserving of punishment.

25. No, they asked the principle if they could do it, he/she said no. They then went and
asked another, after already being told no. I don't know about other households, but when my kids did that when they were younger they got in trouble. When you are told no, the answer is no, not go ask someone else.It has nothing to do with the actual ownership of the chickens.

32. That, and I imagine that when cookouts are permitted the school has rules about the
when, where, and how of food preparation. I'm sure these kids knew perfectly well that they didn't have permission to do what they did, and it was a lot more about creating a spectacle and poking the administration than having a barbecue...

37. Because when you go ask mom if you can have a cookie and she says no, to then
go ask dad if you can have a cookie is kind of circumventing mom's authority as a parent. Like wise with the principle and the other person. All kids do it when they are little and they have to learn that when they are told no, unless they can make a good argument for yes, it's over. Would you like it if someone did that to you?

First step in every chicken recipe:

1. Kill a chicken.

19. Errr.. I have heard two versions of the zeroth step..
First, buy a chicken.

First, steal a chicken.

I guess you could also add for this kid, first, raise a chicken.

Edited on Sat May-21-11 12:48 PM by MineralMan
If you have no chicken, you cannot kill the chicken. If you have no chicken, chicken soup will not be on the menu. And, if you count your chickens before they hatch, you will have to wait a bit before you have a chicken.

Assume the chicken. However, do not do the chicken or choke the chicken.

And I might add that the context I heard the "steal a chicken" was rather bigoted (although not racist).

36. Microwaves were invented to cook live chickens
I suppose you could tie a chicken to a spit and roast it alive, but somehow I think that either of these options would have gotten the students in trouble also.

And I think the kids deserve extra credit, not censure and punishment, for finding an authority figure to grant them permission. This is normal behavior in the adult world, from choosing a jurisdiction for a lawsuit to seeking tax breaks to applying for grants.

47. Silly kids.
They were told no then thought the best idea was to take their live chickens and slaughter them on the school lawn, not at home where they could kill and prepare the meat to be brought to school against the principal's permission. Also it is unknown where the knife came from so they also may have brought a weapon to school in addition to 'littering' or inhumane animal handling/unsanitary food preparation whatever BS 'killing a chicken' they owned charge.
