Now that she won, how will Hochul lead?
As much as we're cheering about Kathy Hochul winning in a staunchly red district, the fact that NY-26 is staunchly red concerns me as how she plans on voting on issues besides Medicare. I will admit to not doing my homework on what her platform is, but if she steps too far to the left, this could be a casualty for her or the next Democrat who may run in the district. I get the feeling she'll tread lightly and vote as a moderate, especially when you consider that she has a shorter turnaround time (18 months rather than two years) to convince voters to send her back, should she run for re-election.

1. To be honest, she won't be there long
Her district is likely to be carved up with the Democratic portions going to Mary Louis Slaughter.

2. I'm not so sure about that
As long as she meets the needs of her constituents, I'm sure that they'll return the favor. In case you haven't noticed, but the crazed and greed GOP and their Teabaggerati running dogs are going down.

This election is proof positive that regular folks are sick and tired of their shit.

3. Depends on what it is she wants to accomplish.
If she wants to get re-elected, she'll represent the wishes of her district...that's kinda how it's supposed to work.

If she votes party line, she probably won't, seeing the make-up of her district and how they vote.

It's going to be up to her to convince her electorate that she votes in their best interest, and that is a Democratic vote.

5. At her victory speech,, she emphasized that she would be representing
the Seniors, small business people and ordinary people
gave example. After her speech when the campaign started,
she said a gentleman came up to her opening his wallet.
He said I live on 100 dollars a week but I want you to
have this for the campaign. She said these are the people
who had my back and I promise when I get to DC, I will
have their back.

Back to Victory Speech. Lets have Millionaires and Billionaires
pay their fair share, let cut the loopholes for Companies
sending our jobs overseas, lets end the oil subsidies--there
are ways to balance the budget without doing it on the backs
of Seniors and decimating Medicare

Hope this gives a little insight.

7. to stay in office, in that district, she will have to stay in the middle
of the political spectrum. Her votes on labor issues will determine if she can be successful. She, also, will never stray too far to the left.

8. She probably won't be invited to join the Progressive Caucus, but she
knows the people of her district, and if she represents them, that's all that can be asked of her. Progressives, nationwide, sometimes forget that not every district in the country is like that of Dennis Kucinich.

9. In two months she will be called a DINO and will be reviled
on DU. In my opinion, it's better to have a Democrat who gives us "numbers" and who votes with us 50% of the time than to have a Republican or a teabagger who votes with us zero percent.

10. I fear you are correct.. We do seem to ignore the politics of
districts and just judge the person who was elected sometimes. I hate the term "blue dog Democrat." Why do people thing a progressive can get elected in a conservative district?

11. Freshmen Congersspersons don't "Lead" anything, they're lucky to get good Committee assignments.
Edited on Wed May-25-11 08:09 AM by ThomWV
Back at home they don't lead anything in the community, in fact most of them don't even get back home all that often and when they go to Washington they are the lowest person on the totem pole. So to call them "leaders" isn't very accurate.
