White People Face the Worst Racism?
This is insane...

From: The Root

http://www.theroot.com/buzz/white-people-face-worst-racism

Whites believe that they have replaced blacks as the primary victims of racial discrimination in contemporary America, according to a new study by researchers at Tufts University's School of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Business School.

The authors of "Whites See Racism as a Zero-Sum Game That They Are Now Losing" found that both whites and blacks agree that anti-black racism has decreased over the last 60 years. That sounds pretty reasonable. But the kicker is that whites surveyed believe that anti-white racism has increased and is now a bigger problem than anti-black racism...

-snip

However, whites believed that racism against whites has increased significantly as racism against blacks has decreased. On average, whites rated anti-white bias as more prevalent in the 2000s than anti-black bias by more than a full point on the 10-point scale. Moreover, some 11 percent of whites gave anti-white bias the maximum rating of 10 compared to only 2 percent of whites who rated anti-black bias a 10. Blacks, however, reported only a modest increase in their perceptions of "reverse racism."

"These data are the first to demonstrate that not only do whites think more progress has been made toward equality than do blacks, but whites also now believe that this progress is linked to a new inequality -- at their expense," note Norton and Sommers. Whites see racial equality as a zero sum game, in which gains for one group mean losses for the other.

...

The study appears in the May 2011 issue of the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science.

10. Scenario: Person A scores 95 on a job application test and person B scores 91.
However, Person B is a member of a group that has 5 points automatically added to their score, which results in Person B's score being raised to 96.

If all other factors are equal, was Person A discriminated against if Person B is hired and Person A is not?

16. I think that is pretty much it.
Although it doesn't happen here (as our town of <9,000 has only 15 black people), I do hear about this a good bit. I have many friends who own businesses both small and large and the ones who employ a good many people tell some pretty awful stories about EEOC.

I know of businesses here in the Sonoma Valley who have had to re-locate to East Bay in order to hire enough minorities to meet EEOC guidelines.

21. Regrettably, the EEOC has outlived its usefulness.
It has devolved into a whiners gallery of second-rate employees and $$$ seeking attorneys.

18. What sort of test was this? Who was it made by? How was it normed?
Maybe the adding of 5 points merely cleared out the inherent bias in the test itself.

Maybe the fact that the person scoring a 91 should have scored a 98 except the test was written from a 'majority' standpoint.

20. Bias...? Well, I am quite certain that there was a bias in favor of those
who exhibited superior professional knowledge in their given field. That's the nature of competition.

Forgive me if I do not agonize over questions of politically correct etiquette, but when a hiring, firing, college entrance, etc. decision is made, group membership should not matter.

6. The end of your link says it best:
"A co-author of the study called the results "surprising." That's putting in mildly. But maybe we've missed the way white Americans have been systemically deprived of access and opportunities. Maybe we've overlooked all the times whites have been targeted by implicit and explicit race-baiting attacks, whether they're playing professional sports or seeking elected office. Maybe we didn't get the memo on the way the legacy of discrimination against white Americans continues to manifest itself in worse outcomes in income, home ownership, health and employment for them, the way white people are told they're "objectively" ugly, and the disgust so many Americans felt the last time a white person ran for president.

Oh, wait, none of that has happened? So we're talking about white people being victimized by things like affirmative action, the Smithsonian's new black museum and scholarships for minorities? In that case, perhaps the study should be renamed, "Whites Have Forgotten What Racial Discrimination Actually Is." Until then, we'll just put these bewildering results in the old "Blame it on the small sample size" file."

Exactly.

22. +1, My first thought as well.
I suspect that if we dig into this, we'll find that the Tea Party and the religious right GOP whites are the ones who think they are discriminated against.

This is why the GOP Southern Strategy, racists dogs whistles work. You can't go wrong telling this group of whites that all of their problems exist because the North won the civil war.

The GOP caters to this group.

11. I feel so discriminated against every time I set off the inventory control alarm at a store...
... and the clerk just waves me right through.

What the FUCK?

Aren't you going to search my bags?

It's because I'm white, isn't it?

It's really not fair.

Just once, I want to be treated like everybody else, and subjected to a humiliating search while other shoppers pretend not to be watching.

14. Do an informal poll of your friends
Ask them how many times they've been pulled over by police in traffic. Organize the data by race, and see how it looks.

19. I hear it a lot in IT -- All of the good jobs are going to Indian/Pakistani/Bangledeshi folk who are
willing to uproot and move from one city to another for a 3-6 month gig. A lot of white (and black for that matter) programmers are seeing their skills go by the wayside as corporations opt for the $60.00/hr L1 resource that they can shed after 3-6 months in favor of the full-time or contract white resource at $80.00/hr to pay the placement firm mark-up plus the $15-$20 hr it costs to pay thier benefits while they are on contract.

Most of the hiring managers for good project work in our market now are Indian/Pakistani.

It feels like racism, but it is simple economics most likely.

23. The article is about 11% of whites. 11% is not a very good representation.
A better name for the article would be, "Whites don't think they face worse racism."

You're being manipulated.
